So I just recently learned about all this and of course the first thing I did was go to my big jar of change and seperate all of the pre 82's and nickles.
So then today I went to the bank and picked up $10 dollars in pennies. 2 of the rolls were CWR and the rest were the plastic bank wraps. So anyway, I found Like 2 coppers in the bank wraps, and it seems that thats what my bank has the most of is the clear bank wraps. Is it just too late to get into pennies?

First off, welcome to the site. Secondly unless you have a hoarder in your same small town, you should be fine. You can always go to another bank if your town has one and if not the next time you go to a bigger town/city save up and buy a little more. Definitely not too late |
Buying CU cents!!!! Paying 1.2 unlimited amounts wanted. Can pick up if near Ohio area. |

fhbob, welcome to the group! I got into collecting/hoarding copper only since February of this year and asked myself the same question over and over before jumping in with both feet.
At this point there seems to still be tons of copper remaining for us "small fish" to enjoy finding reasonable amounts. Like most things you will run into cycles and get skunked and find nothing but regardless it is a lot of fun.
The forum has a great group of folks with tons of different experiences. Also, let me be the first to tell you a secret, sometimes denied. Yes, you can find Indian Head pennies in circulation! I have found three at random so far and I’m dumbfounded every time I do. Second, if you want to get going fast you "need" a Reydale. Lastly, enjoy yourself and remember it is the experience of the trip versus the destination that counts the most here.

It's never too late. No Tim, I didn't get it all yet.. heck, I didn't even get all the Indians yet. Interestingly, my percentages seem to be increasing lately. Normally I get about 20%, but I got a couple of boxes of CWR the other night that yielded 38%!!! I think this is one of the best times to jump in. Lots of old penny jars being cashed in right now to buy gas and groceries. Welcome to the forum fhbob. |

Welcome fhbob. As long as there are ANY coppers left, it is not too late. You will probably want a Ryedale to maximize the time that is left though.

In Canada I am getting 45 percent copper from sorting when I exclude the new minty fresh boxes I keep finding. Maybe 35-40 percent of the many US pennies I find in my Canadian change are copper so we have a long way to go before it is not worth saving pennies. That said, the mints keep putting out new debased coins, and pulling the older ones for "alloy recovery", combined with private sorters accumulating means this deal is a limited time opprotunity.
The other easier ways to collect (little work or sorting required) including buying copper pennies off others here, and buying boxes and rolls of nickels. Also a great investment are Canadian Pure Ni Nickels which can be acquired from the Canadian members here.
As others point out, a Ryedale is definately a must for serious hoarding.
Some sort to sell now and make a little money on the side, others collect for a long term commodity metal play, some for insurance in an economic collapse. Most enjoy building an international coin collection for a penny or nickel a coin. Many like finding (or hoping to find) very old coins.
However you choose to pursue the opprotunity, #1 is have fun and remember to find ways help out others by sharing what you learn and giving to charity. |

Welcome aboard Fhbob, No it is definitely NOT too late to get into copper hoarding. I agree completely with HCBTT. My percentages have been going UP lately also. I agree the economy is forcing people to take their jars of coins to the bank to pay the higher expenses.
If you are not having good luck with the banks nearest you, you may have to go out further and find different banks. There may be a hoarder near you or you may have just hit a bad cycle as copper catcher said. Wait a few days and try it again.
Good Luck. |

My BofA gets rolls and rolls of coins from the car wash place right up the road from it. I get all kinds of weird percentages, but it is always over 20%. Welcome to the club fhbob. |

| hi, long time reader but new member. i have been sorting for about a year and half and have done pretty good so far as i only go through 1 to 2 boxes a week. it is never to late, if your local bank is not going good find another small town bank that wraps their own. it has served me pretty well with normal 20+%. and the harder times get the more penny jars will be turned in. don't give up and keep looking! |

| Smaller banks are the best. Loose coins they have just taken in are generally better. |

| (weighted) average copper percentages have been hovering in the 27% range (national average) since 2006. I haven't done any scientific tests yet, but I don't see any trends in the percentages yet. When I do see major trends, you all will be among the first to know! The thing of it is that, even though it seems, from inside the community, that there is significant hoarding going on, there really isn't. Hoarders have yet to dent the copper penny supply in a significant way. |

| We are actually going to need some industrial scale sorters (Jackson Metals for example) to really dent the copper supply. Just don't buy from my little Bank of America branch that gets all my US zinc dumps now and you will do fine. |

| I suggest anyone new coming into the game now first buy boxes (at least $250 worth to start from several banks or branches over a period of time) and then weigh them as to get an idea of their copper/zinc precentages.......(see box hoarding thread). If your percentages are good then you can consider either hand sorting them or going for a Ryedale sorting machine. |
