One of my sorting goals this year was to find a 1909 penny (any mint), an Indian Head and a Steel 1943 penny. I have found a couple of Indian Heads and 3 steel pennies so far this year. No 1909's.
I found a penny in a $25 Brinks box today, and it looks to be a 1909 penny. Unfortunately, the penny has been drilled with about a 3/8 drill bit, right in the date. I know 3 of the digits of the penny, It's a wheat, so it's a 19??. The last digit is a 9 because I can see the tail end of the 9, just like the 2 digit. I do not know what the 3rd digit is, but the penny color tells me it is an early 1900 (light tan). It is worn like other early 1900 pennies I have. It is Philadelphia mint (no mint mark) and there is no VDB on the back.
I'll keep trying.

| I have found some teens lately in sorts and I have a passable G-4 condition 1911 penny. So, as time goes on, a 1909 may crop up just by law of averages? I do have a well worn penny that looks like it has the "0" portion in form, but the wear is so bad it is very debatable. No S mark on it at all and forget about ever seeing a VDB, the wear is erosion by turnover. I think it is just the time factor of searching enough and alas, the 1909 that someone let slip out of their coin jar will end up in one of my sorts. |

This gets me fired up to start sorting again. I stopped for the last month while in the process of moving, but the thrill of the hunt is too fun to pass up. Plus with alot of people seeming to be cashing in their old change jars this may be the best time to be searching.
For the OP...hang in there you'll find one. I have sorted about 90,000 pennies so far and no steel cents or Indian Heads and I think my oldest wheat was 1911 maybe. |

I found a PERFECT 1919 with a nice red tint. Looked like it was made yesterday. I thank my dad for getting me into wheats when I had my paper route back in the 70's. 1914-D in pretty rough shape is in my classic blue collector album to this day. Also got a 1909 VBD from my paper route. |

I have found none of the above, '10s, '19s is about it. I hand sort, only about 75K so far total. Good luck to both of us! |

| I've got a single 1909 vdb, about 12 or so steels, and a solitary Indian Head. Of course I've got lot's of wheats in the coppers that I've not seen yet. Someday when I go through the copper who knows what I'll find :) |

I buy all of mine for four cents each. I always find at least 10 or more 1909's in a bag of 5000 wheats. |
