Actually this is Anette Del Sur, an office employee at the Douglas Aircraft Company. This photo was taken by Alfred Palmer for the OWI (Office of War Information) in October of '42, part of a scrap salvaging campaign for the war effort.
My concern is that those turnings can be as sharp as a Wilkinson razor, she is handling them with bare hands, and they are on top of her head and around her neck! Yikes!
I would like to think when this photo was being posed, someone took some emery cloth to those turnings to take off the edges.

This is exactly how I picture Dagny Taggert from Ayn Rand's novel "Atlas Shrugged" to be like. I'm currently a third of the way through that book.

Looks like she was sorting through the turnings looking for what was left of her finger.

We end up with stainless turnings like that at our machine shop quite often. Darn things will take a finger clean off, bone and all.
