Just saw this online. Hey Hoard, are you going to try to break this record inside your house?

FORT SCOTT, Kan. (AP) — Hundreds of people in Kansas are hoping their pennies go a long way.

Residents of Fort Scott, just west of the Missouri line, are spending the week trying to break two world records: the longest line of pennies and assembling a mile of pennies in the fastest time.

Members of the Fort Scott Youth Activities Teams and hundreds of volunteers are trying to create a 40-mile chain of pennies — nearly 4 million — in the parking lot of Fort Scott Middle School. The effort started Tuesday and will be judged by Guinness World Records on Friday.

The record for laying the fastest mile of pennies is 2 hours, 24 minutes, 15 seconds, set in February by teachers and pupils in the United Kingdom, said Kaoru Ishikawa, a records manager with Guinness.

The mark for the longest line of pennies is 34.57 miles, set Aug. 6, 1995, in Malaysia.

The stunt is part of an effort to raise money for about $4 million in improvements at Ellis Park in Fort Scott.

Ya go Malaysia (my second home) and even more impressive when you know a Malaysian penny is smaller then a US penny. They pretty much dropped thier penny after that stunt.

I'm not too far. Probably the closest of anyone here that I know of, except for maybe topeka. Haven't heard from him in a while though.

the weight your dealing with, you better have an awful big van to bring them home in. If my math is right, if they were all copper, they'd weigh about 133 tons!

Imagine how dirty those pennies will be after they pick them up. They will be all full of gravel and who knows what else. On second though, I probably don't want them. My poor Apprentice would choke on all of the dirt.

wow 133 tons thats a lot . I had just gotten up when I posted that.
Lets see, if they have $40,000 and $3,000 is one ton. Then It be about 13 tons? I should have thought that one through... 133 tons.

The Malaysian stunt was done in 1995. I personally have a 1 sen coin from Malaysia dated 2005. So when did they drop their penny?

I figure a lot of them are going to be zinc so it should come in around 12 tons. Bet they don't get that many though. That would be almost a year's worth of pennies for me. If I could get them raw like that it would be much easier than breaking them out of rolls. You could rig up some penny slews to shake the gravel off before processing. Maybe Deal and Topeka can go in on it together and take down whatever they come up with.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Update from the Associated Press--it looks like they've set a new record:

Associated Press • Fort Scott, Kan.

Hundreds of volunteers have proven pennies really can go a long way. Miles, in fact.

Three days after the first coin was placed on the ground Tuesday evening, the group had assembled a 40-mile-long chain of pennies Friday night in the parking lot of Fort Scott Middle School.

"This is pretty awesome,” said volunteer Diana Mitchell.

It’s the longest line of pennies ever assembled, eclipsing the old mark by more than five miles, according to an official from the Guinness Book of World Records. The previous record was 34.57 miles, set in Malaysia in 1995.

“They set the record for the longest line of coins and the whole community came together,” said Kaoru Ishikawa, a Guinness record manager. “It’s been quite a moving time.”

It was the second record set in this town just west of the Missouri line. On Thursday night, volunteers and members of the Fort Scott Youth Activities Team put down a mile of pennies in a time of 2:23.01 — just 74 seconds faster than the previous record of 2:24.15, set in February by teachers and pupils in Rickmansworth, United Kingdom, Ishikawa said.

The penny program was part of an effort to raise money for improvements at Fort Scott’s Ellis Park. The $33,790 raised will go toward $4 million in projects planned for the park.

“It is so wonderful to be part of a community that believes in something and comes out to lay coins,” Mitchell said. “So many people said they just came out to look, but they ended up helping out.”

The Malaysian stunt was done in 1995. I personally have a 1 sen coin from Malaysia dated 2005. So when did they drop their penny?

Wikipedia says: "As of April 1, 2008, a rounding mechanism of prices to the nearest 5 sen, applied to the total bill only, is in force, which was first announced in 2007 by Bank Negara Malaysia, in an attempt to render the 1 sen coin irrelevant.[14] Individual items and services can still be priced in multiples of 1 sen with the final totaled rounded to the nearest 5 sen. For example, purchasing two items priced RM4.88 and RM3.14, totalling RM8.02, would then be rounded to RM8.00. If each item had been individually rounded (to RM4.90 and RM3.15 respectively) the incorrect total would have been RM8.05. In practice, individual items will probably remain priced at so-called "price points" (or psychological pricing and odd-number pricing) ending in 98 and 99 to maximize rounding gains for the vendor, especially in the case of single item purchases. Existing one (1) sen coins in circulation will remain legal tender for payments up to RM2.00"

It also says they demonitized the 1 RM coin "On December 7, 2005, the 1 ringgit coin was demonetised and withdrawn from circulation. This was partly due to problems with standardisation (two different versions of the second series coin were minted) and forgery."

I must have merged the date of the demonitization of the 1 RM coin with the rendering of the 1 sen coin pointless into one event in my head. In 4 trips to Malaysia over 5 years I have yet to be handed a 1 sen coin. My wife brought a few to Canada though.

This is another example of how Canada and the US could dispense with the penny over time and with little fanfare. Not sure the current exchange rate, but last year the rate was about 4 sen to 1 US penny.

“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.” – George Bernard Shaw.
