Unfortunately, I have more questions than real answers. Maybe you can help!

First, I don’t want to mess with acids and most e-books and other information out there being sold seems to be old or canned information.

Second, people that are in the scrap/recycling business don’t want to help someone else interested in getting into the business.

I am not sure if this is ture or a mythbut unless you can get into a huge supply of old government mainframe computers buying old person computers and trying to scrap them for gold means you need to buy a ton of them!

I was thinking about grinding up the boards but really don't know if that makes sense. I have not found a machine that does this and not sure how long it would take to pay for itself.

I have seen offered on eBay by gdman the iShor Simplicity Scrap Gold Platinum Refining System. It seems like a good alternative but again I have not heard many comments from people about how successful they are using this either.

Any suggestions welcome…

Copper Catcher,

Bascially if you don't want to deal with acids, don't do gold refining. There are various methods of doing it but almost all of them involve some sort of acid reaction. The easiest and probably most safe way of doing it involves an acid-peroxide solution which you can buy most of the materials at home depot. But even then you are looking at separating the gold in acids, dissolving them in chloride, dropping the gold with SMB then melting down the powder.

Apparently there are ways to dissolve gold using iodine as a leach but I have no clue on how to do that.

I've heard mixed reviews about the iShor system. From what I hear, it's not as simplistic as it seems and the yields are not terribly great. Also, it's expensive for the amount of gold you can process.

The other problem about gold processing is that it takes a LOT of volume to make it cost effective. If you are getting that much in volume I would consider just selling it directly to buyers in China or India. You can find buyers on recycle.net but keep in mind they are looking for containers full of material. Somewhere around a ton or two at a time on a consistent basis.

I am a small e-scrapper and I don't get the volume that i would like to process the gold myself or be an exporter. What I do is get a bunch of boards / RAM / and processors together and sell them on Ebay. The prices are very fair (sometimes you get a lot more than you asked for) and it takes the complication out of processing. Once I get enough money from sales I buy a gold or silver coin.

Also, I NEVER pay for computer parts or boards. I send out ads to computer repair shops, go on craigslist and freecycle, and just spread the news via word of mouth. It's amazing what people want to get rid of these days. Also keep in mind, if the computers work or the RAM is good you can actually make more money reselling these computers. I usually will just donate fully working systems if they are recent. My general rule of thumb is if it's 5 years or older it's scrap.

If you are still interested in processing your own gold go to goldrefiningforum.com. There are some really great people there who have done just about everything with gold and precious metals processing. A guy there named lazersteve has also been very generous and actually made videos you can watch. Amazing stuff.

Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me or post here with any other questions. Good luck!

Tom

Take this job and shove it. I don't want to work here no more...

You will need acids. Goldrefiningforum.com . Also get a copy of CM Hokes book refining precious metal wastes. It was available for free in ebook form on the previous listed site. All the info you need is there, and they are HONEST in they're info. Even if you use an electro-strip process, you still use an acid for the bath.

Skip the Shor system, it has been tested on the site i mentioned and MANY people give feedback. Still the same basic process'
