I've heard both pro and con about war nickels for silver content--I think someone had said that refiners have trouble with the manganese content in the nickels. But I just got a second-chance offer on eBay on 19 rolls of war nickels that the seller is offering me for $599. That would be more than 42 ounces of silver at just under $14.20 an ounce. Half of my brain is telling me that I'd be an idiot not to accept this offer, the other half of my brain is telling me to save my FRNs for 90 percent junk coins. What do you guys think?

btw, most people will say take, because they don't know about Bruners. Go to bruners!!! You get em for local too, I bought mine for 32 a roll when silver was 20/troz. I say pass. If this is more than 10% of your silver stash, I also am going to say pass completely on them and would advise you to never have more than 10% of your stash(preferably 5-7.5%) and to buy 90%, or cheaper 40%(My choice.) I'm going to strangle you very soon if you don't make a trip over to the coin store and look at the prices for these things. Ask em for war nickels, they have some in that safe! Sell 90% for 12x, too. Pretty good deals over there if you ask me. Just don't go around trying to get good deals on .999+, they think spot is 22 or something. >_< |

I am not a big fan of war nickels (unless of course you get them at face).
I'd pass--unless of course you know you can turn them for a quick profit--and use the money for 90%--(or 40% as Gr33nday43 notes--it is cheaper, although personally I don't have much--I am still debating about the relative merits...hmmm, maybe I should start a new thread about that).

I just got a message from the guy saying that he sold the nickels, so that's not an issue any more for me at the moment, but I think another thread on the merits of holding war nickels would be good. I still have a couple rolls. |

| You all know I like nickels......... but I don't like war nickels as a silver investment at all. I would much rather have 40% halves instead. I hold on to the ones I find but I'm not interested in buying them for their silver content due to the reasons you stated. I can see a colector's value to them perhaps someday though. |

As some might have noticed, I paid a good price for $1.20 face in war nicks on this board recently. I've found two of them while sorting and hope to find more over time. So I picked these up as a referance set for calibrating to sort for war nicks on the Ryedale someday. Also they got shipped for free riding along with the Canadian Silver I bought at the same time.
I had never seen a War Nick before starting to roll sort, and thought I had found two of the uglier ones in circulation. Now that I have some more... I realize they are all ugly! |

War nix are the bane of refiners, and therefore, when the time comes to sell, you won't get anywhere close to the value of the silver content. I'd buy 90% junk or .999 bullion---or pennies! |

| My local shop only pays 40 cents for war nickels. You can sell on E-bay for .75-1.00. I have a roll or two, but I prefer to get 40 or 90%. |
Are you throwing that out? |

Just curious, Legacy, are you going across the border to buying war nickels in the U.S. or are you buying them online?
Picked them up from the comfort of my own home via simplicitycounts in this thread You must be logged in to see this link. along with a bunch of Cdn Silver.
Of course had I waited I might have got the 14% discounted offered on the 40% later... by hey, no gas, no fees, and a fellow member selling, so no complaints here. |
