I have accumulated a couple hundred silver-plated spoons (Wm. Rogers is the most common brand) over the past several months for almost no money. How much sense does it make--or does it?--to hoard silver-plated items given the general bullishness of a lot of people on demand for silver increasing? Or is the amount of actual silver in the plating insignificant to the point where it wouldn't be practical to smelt (or have someone else smelt) the spoons at some point?

Some of that stuff is worth more than melt on E-BAY. There are people out there trying to complete sets. You might want to look into that first.
Another choice would be to try and sell it as copper scrap. You have to figure out what it is plated over. Copper? Brass? Other? #2 copper scrap I think is going for around $2.90 a pound.
Last choice would take some work, but you could figure out how to do your own refining. Hardest part, IMHO, is getting the chemicals. The rest from what I have read is not all that difficult. Of course, it would not be worth it for just one batch, but it would be equipment and skills that you could use for the rest of your life. |

I was going to suggest selling them on ebay to people collecting sets. You will need to figure out the pattern #s. I bought some Rogers First Love on ebay to suppliment my grandma's set she passed to my mom. Doing that I found a big market for various patterns and paid $5 a piece. Also saw someone making a nice letter opener from knife handles and new blades for a value added play.
The less hassle route would be to sell them as a batch to one of the companies that sells replacement silverware and let them figure out what it is.
Generally silver plate is not worth much, except for its intended use as a fork or whatever. |

I don't know what they would pay, but they do buy from individuals. Factor in the hassle and all the costs with Feebay Ebay, the difference might not be that drastic.
If anything this site is a good source to figure out what you actually have.

Blugill nailed exactly the company I was thinking of.
From thier home page (this is insanity!): Our 415,000 square foot facilities (the size of seven football fields!) house an incredible inventory of 12 million pieces in more than 286,000 patterns, some over 100 years old!
And off thier FAQ: Where do you get your inventory?
Over 700 suppliers (this could be YOU!) from across the country help us maintain our inventory by buying pieces from jewelry stores, department stores, estate sales and auctions. In addition, we deal directly with major manufacturers to obtain additional inventory. We are constantly looking for inventory in all the patterns that we carry and have the most efficient, successful search service in the world.

| I can't add much, but at one time I think that it worked out to $.50 in silver per piece of silver plated tableware. That was when silver was $10 per oz. |

for silverware I believe plated tea spoons:
1/2 plate ................. 1 Toz / 144 (gross) standard plate ................. 2 Toz / 144 double plate ................. 4 Toz / 144 triple plate ................. 6 Toz / 144 Quadruple plate ................. 8 Toz / 144 Federal plate ................. 9 Toz / 144
Silverplate is hard to make it worth it, but I'm trying to get a setup going. |

Not sure I can translate your table above. How many plated spoons and other items would have the equivalent of an ounce of silver? |

| I agree with the others--try replacements.com first, then ebay. |
