Hi folks,
I'm new at this and need some info. I have two small motors with copper windings. On one, the copper looks red. On the other, it's a mix of green and red. I've scanned the net for information on copper color but haven't found anything. I just want to know if the color affects the price. Anyone know?

Heat and water exposure can cause differences in coloring.

There should be no change in price.

May also be the color of lacquer used to coat the windings.

Hi Scrap. I'm guessing you have some really small motors, like those you would find in hair dryers, toys, vcrs, etc. If that's the case ,the color of the wire doesn't matter. You'll get number 2 copper prices for this type of copper. Mondays prices in Tacoma, Washington for number 2 was 2.40/lb.

If it were larger wire (16 gauge or larger), it would be considered number 1 copper. If that were the case, then the price would be affected by any coating on the wire. If you have 16 gauge wire with no coating, it was bright, etc, it is considered number 1 bright, if it has a coating, is burnt, etc, it would just be considered number 1, which is worth a little less than bright.

Hope that helps. Good luck, and please share your thoughts, ideas, experiences, etc with the rest of us, and we'll all do the same.

Thanks for the replies. Those motors were from two old box fans. I have a larger motor with what looks like the 16 gauge and several small motors with finer wire. I cut all the copper from the motors, which was easier than I thought it would be (once I got the hang of it). Everything goes in tomorrow so I'll let ya'll know what I get.

The larger wire was #1 copper, $2.75 lb. The rest was #2, $2.40 lb. I was pleased.
