So far this is what I have..
1.Get a scale.
2.Get a ryedale.
3.Call all banks in the area to see who has a free coin sorter.
4.Go to the banks, check out the sorters for coins per minute using 50 cent rolls and a stopwatch.
5.Get an account at the banks with good coins per minute sorters.
6.Call around for a good source bank that will order pennies and then get an account with them.
7.Get a cart.
8.Start sorting and hoarding.

UPDATE: Steps 1,2,and 3 have been completed.

With you guys being experienced, are there any steps I missed?

well, you dont need a ryedale if you dont plan on doing too much, you could hand sort.
but if you do alot, put bring tellers treats like chocolate coins on that list.

Sounds like you got it down to a science already. I don't know about 3 and 4. Frankly, if you can find a bank with a free coin counter you are way ahead of the game. I wouldn't worry too much about which one is faster. Free coin counting is going to be much faster than you rolling your own zinc rejects no matter how "slow" the free counter is. Also, my dump bank, which has a free counter, does not require that I have an account with them in order for me to "dump" my rejects there.

Welcome to penny hoarding/sorting.

You are lucky to have such a plethora of dump banks. Many here have to count and roll their dump coins themselves before returning them to the bank.

I'm lucky too. I have a few dump banks with coin counters, and they do not require accounts. One of them has a "5% charge for non-customers", but they do not enforce it. Also, if you call a bank branch, that branch may not have a coin counter, but another branch of the same bank may.

The credit union I have an account with has a counter that's free up to $200. After that it's 5%. However as a hand sorter with 5 branches I can reach on my lunch hour, it's never cost me anything. I did find out today they won't sell change to non members. A guy came in behind me and wanted some, but left empty handed. I never knew that.

Are you throwing that out?

*Does not have a bank with a free coin counter*

*Has to count or roll all his zinc coins to return them*

Has somehow found a way to manage though..

My dump bank has a decent coin counter and best part is it can hold up too 1500.00 in pennies not quite sure as I haven't tested it out yet. The part that isn't so good is that there is always a half-dollar sorter filling the bins up. Gee some people have no respect for the little guys.

Scotty your lucky. I have free coin sorters in two banks near me, but they only hold $100 in pennies at a time.

same. All the banks around me got rid of their free counters because they were too expensive to operate. I have to use my own machine, and have no limit on how much I can return.

I feel sorry for those who have to roll their zinc. I sorted about $10 in the car today, I then rerolled the zincs and spent them. In the time it took me to reroll three rolls of zinc, my counter could have done 2 bags. And the ryedale could have sorted those pennies faster, but with nothing better to do with 4 hours riding in a car, I could hand sort.

Poor guys.

I have about 15 in my area and spread them out without discrimination.
The best part is three of them are open 24 hours a day - with Cummins Jetsorts - 2000+ per minute!

I feel sorry for anybody that has to roll their zinc too.. that is the way I started.

*Has plenty of "free" counters available.. all within 20 feet.*

6 counters, no waiting.. 8 if I flip the automatic coin rolling machines to free count mode.

Never having to wait for some half dollar sorter to dump his load in the free coin counter at the bank.. priceless!

When you started they were printing on pounded bark and hadn't invented ink yet.

Well, Free to use.

I gave them to me.. I always buy myself all the best toys.

Nah fb101.. I don't go back to the pounded bark days.
My earliest US copper coin sorted only dates back to 1787. We didn't even have Ryedales back in those days.. we had to sort everything by hand.

They use less electricity than a TV. And I hardly ever have more than 3 machines running at one time. Ever see those videos with the guy spinning a bunch of plates on sticks? I don't want to work that hard.. LOL.

I run my ryedale at the same time as my counter. Never turn off the ryedale (unless I have to) Just keep feeding the ryedale, zincs fall into a Half dollar box, when it gets about 30% full I pull it out and quickly put in an empty one. A few zincs bounce on the floor or countertop, I get those later. Then I pour the zincs into the counter. Only turn it off when the basket gets about $15 then pour them into a $50 bank bag.

Used to do each one seperate, now I can do twice as many in the same time.

I would add to list to get yourself a digital scale. I got one off Ebay that goes up to 75 pounds. The neat thing is that it has a tare feature that it won't weigh the container just the pennies.

Good idea. I just bought one off ebay with a 600g capacity. I also just bought a ryedale and called all the banks.

I agree.. digital scales should be on your equipment list. They can help you quickly sort out dud boxes and dud rolls. A big one for boxes and a small one for rolls.

I pretty much keep the Ryedale running constantly like cyberdan.. just rotating the fill boxes. I do a quick sort of the zinc to pluck out the Indians and old wheats, then dump them in one of my Glory CN-12 counting machines where they are quickly counted directly into $50 bags for dumping at my primary dump bank or I dump them into one of the Glory automatic rolling machines where they are rolled up for deposit in my alternative dump banks.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Is 600 gram capacity enough? that is only a little over a pound. While you're waiting on the Ryedale, buy some boxes of pennies and have them ready to go once it arrives. I went thru 6 boxes at one time when mine came.
