during my sorting I have come across 3 or 4 newer pennies that have a gold tint to them. Does anyone know what happened to them and if they are worth anything? They are all in almost perfect shape, just a funny color, like the copper is missing or something.

| I haven't found any of these, but if you think the copper is missing you'll need a gram scale to weigh them. They should come up about 2.6g. If they come up lower than 2.4g or so, you might have a missing copper layer. I"m inclined to think not, but it's worth checking. I don't know what pennies missing layers are worth, you could scout ebay to find out. I'm also not an error expert so you might get more information checking here: You must be logged in to see this link. |

Several possibilities. Pure Gold made by a someone with to much money . Gold plated as a novelty . Painted with Gold paint by an crazy artist . Or just a normal cent that has started to tone. Note that the newer cents from 1982 to present are Copper coated. Not made with what used to be a Brass or Bronze material so the effects on the Copper is different based on where it was. The older, pre 82 cents were made with Copper, Zinc and Tin which is in reality Brass. Those usually just turned Brownish. |

| AAHHHHHHH. Here is another possibility. At a flea market there was this guy demonstrating an auto polish. He continuously used some on Pennies to show how they could be made to look like Gold with this stuff. If he and others do this all day eventually someone is likely to get them in change. |

Those are worth THOUSANDS!! Oh, wait, that was a dream... Some nicer 70s pennies look like that too. |

| I had a chat with an large error coin dealer who says they are real, they would need to be authenticated (pcgs/ngc/??), and they're worth about $15 each, being fairly common. |

Sounds like it's not worth it considering the authentication fee is more than $15 for sure.
FYI, Stanton is one of the authors of the Cherrypickers' Handbook, if you're familiar with that. |

Try to remember that Brass is actually Copper, Tin and Zinc. Bronze is also composed of Copper but contains numerous other substances encluding even Silicon, Phosporus, Aluminum, and just about anything else to make it appear as needed. The newer cents are actually plated with Copper only. However, even pure Copper will take on a Brass appearance if polished. |
