Today I went into one bank where last week I'd asked to put in a standing weekly order for $400 in pennies. I went in today to make a deposit and asked the teller I'd spoken with last week about the status of the pennies, which would be coming in tomorrow, and she said that the vault manager didn't place the order because there was not enough room in the vault--which seems like a lame excuse to me, since 16 bricks don't really take up much room. I'm going to call tomorrow to talk to the vault manager and try to bargain with him, but it seems very unusual in my estimation that the main branch of one of the larger banks in town wouldn't have enough room for 16 bricks. Is this guy just blowing smoke? How small are typical bank vaults that they wouldn't have room for this much in pennies? Or is this guy just not WANTING to place an order of this size.

I'm thinking that I'll probably just hit up every branch in the area (about eight of them, I think) for $100 a week even though that would be a bit more involved so that I can at least get pennies as opposed to not being able to get them at all. Any thoughts or ideas?

Since I got my beastie about the time you got yours, I have come to the same conclusions. Banks are now becoming REALLY uncooperative. Last run to town I wanted $150 and came home with $4 after 4 banks. They weren't banks I had accounts with. And Chase bank wouldn't let me deposit unverified coin into my wifes account, "because I wasn't a signatory on the account". Hope to have that fixed soon, but they said the "back office" had caught it and I needed to have her there to approve me to the account.

We have a charity drive for kids that lasts a week here, I have wondered if the crusade for children week had something to do with it. I'm also trying to work their "donated pennies" into my supply chain.

It's like trying to keep a dragon fed! I am thinking smaller amounts, spread out and a few hundred in sorted rolled zinc so I can offer to "swap" them so they do not run short for their business customers. If we sell pennies, is not our business as important as theirs?

I think that on Friday I'm going to try Moboman's approach, from You must be logged in to see this link.:

quote:
It all depends on the bank. I did a driveby at a bank that I didnt have an account with at the time, and asked if they had any pennies they wanted to get rid of. The tellers dug through their safes, and through the vault. Came up with over $200. They said thank you soo much, we've been tripping over them in the vault lately.

So you really never know... If you make their life easier, they will probably be happy to help you.

Some branches actually do have very small vaults. I remember I used to get 12 boxes every week from one of my banks and they didn't have enough room in the vault for those 12 boxes. The deal I made was that I would pick them up on the day they got delivered so they didn't have to worry about putting them in the vault.

Get used to rejection though.. it is going to happen. You didn't think you would just buy a magic machine the copper river would start flowing did you? There is some challenge to this game we play.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

One of the banks I use is a small branch, but also my favourite. Nicest workers, and they go out of their way to help me. To help them I only order up to six boxes at a time from them. Keeps their limited vault space free and keeps them happy.

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."
