Inspired by the "reactions" thread...
What's your favorite snappy answer?
Keeping in mind that it doesn't pay to be rude to your bankers, but random nosy passers-by are always fair game
|
Considering Verizon Business service? Perhaps you'd like to consider a nice drain cleaner enema instead? |

The snappy answer is: I smash em!
I make coins, so the choice is obvious for me... I use them as blanks! It does not take very much ciphering to conclude that using pennies as blanks when they can be bought below melt is WAY cheaper AND easier than buying fresh mill-stock and punching the blanks. I do punch blanks of course, as necessary for certain projects... but I try to design projects such that coins can be used as blanks. I have used copper pennies, silver dimes, silver quarters, war nickels, and various foreign coins as blanks when I can work around their size and weight.
Here are a couple examples of my "Vinland" series done using US copper cents as blanks. They were furnace annealed to soften them and abrasive tumbled to clean them before striking... then tumbled again with chemicals to attain the chocolate brown patina. Occasionally the "undertype" may be detectable under magnification, but generally it is impossible to tell that a penny was used as the blank.
this is the obverse of the Leif Eiricsson penny
this is the obverse of the ULLR penny
this is the reverse common to both of the above
Leif Eiricsson is of course the Icelandic explorer that first attempted a settlement he called "VINLAND" in North America around 1000 AD. The settlement failed as we know... but if it had thrived this may be what his coins would have looked like.
ULLR is the Norse patron saint of skiing and archery and is shown with bow on skis.
These are just examples of what can be done using a penny as a blank... I have done dozens of other fantasy coins in different themes... most especially a complex series based on the mythology of Middle Earth as written by profesor Tolkien. |

"I have a bubble gum problem, just cant stop. Do you have a machine here by chance?"
"I'm in construction and they're cheaper than washers."
"WHAT?You mean you didn't hear? Lemme take these to the car while you talk to the teller, I'll be right back to explain it to you, man this is an oppertunity.-drive away quickly"
"I'm super gluing them all together to replace my furniture with ones made from pennies" Grin like a eight year old at disney during christmas when ya say it. If they look serious and say "really"? tell em "ya, I got broke into and had my furniture stolen, bet they don't carry it away THIS time!"
"I'm going to take these pennies and go find a fountain, I just had a problem come up that needs alot of wishes to do"

To which the teller says they never heard such a thing. To which you reply that the metal is shipped off to China for the Olympics.

I most always look straight faced and say "I eat them, (pause) I've heard like, copper has medecinal values and I usually bake them in cookies or breads then snack away!" I wait a few seconds and depending on how rude they have been I might tell them that I am just kidding and I really collect wheats. Most tellers are happy to hear that I "sort for wheats" (HOARD COPPER!) rather than eat them. |

Are you throwing that out? |

I used the Build a Penny Bridge answer from this thread when a teller asked me today. She didn't believe me. |

I was serious about the penny bridge suggestion:
You must be logged in to see this link.
and for you nickel freaks: You must be logged in to see this link.
The teller did not believe HCBTT because he didn't bring the photos, plus he needed to add that he was trying to replicate the Golden Gate in 1/2 scale with pennies to explain the volume he is going through.
Another true story is that you are searching for a 1943 Copper Penny worth $ 200,000 according to this article (highly unreliable source) You must be logged in to see this link.

If we combine all of the zinc we have laying around, we could break a record for the biggest penny bridge!
I have one of those fake 1943's. I was pretty excited but when i dropped it, it sure sounded like steel. |

I think the bridge is really cool.. but stacking in not my forte.. if I stack up 10 pennies I somehow find a way to knock them over.. I am more of a big pile guy. |

I tried building a bridge out of wheats today, but it fell over . I kind of like the way pennies look in a bucket though, rather that in a pile. |

That was my answer every time. But now I'm down to just ordering pennies. I havent done any drive bys in over a month. Next week im setup for orders for 22 boxes from 3 different banks, and 1 CU.
Its not that my one bank wouldnt order them from me. Its so that I get boxes on different days. |
