Be on the lookout for yard sale brass objects for sale. I came across a brass sunface yesterday priced at five dollars. I got them down to two which is less than what I can scrap it for. A while back I came across a lot of heavy brass lamps for way under their scrap value.
Copper objects are hard to find, but brass is rather common. It only takes minutes to scan a sale to see if there is any brass to be found.

I go to several 'thrift stores' regularly. At least two of them have no idea how to price brass. I find heavy pieces of solid brass being sold for less than lighter pieces of brass-colored steel. I keep a magnet on my keychain to know the difference. I have numerous candlesticks, dishes, bowls, etc....
Keep a magnet, and good hunting, WheatieFan

The local scrap yard was buying brass for near $2.00 a pound last week and it is pretty easy to find it for a $1.00 a pound or less at garage sales.
Unfortunately, I have been too busy sorting pennies to hit the sales. I am pretty sure that I am making more, in theory, sorting pennies then I could hitting the sales, but I have not actually tried doing a time trial. The results could be interesting...one lucky gold or a few silver finds could easily tip the balance in favor of the the sales.
Sure is a blast though...I miss it.

| I went to a thrift store yesterday, since they had 50% off everything. I was going there to buy brass and copper. They didn't have any brass or copper so I thought I would check out the jewery. I was looking through and found a few pieces that I thought I could break even and bought them. Then I saw this huge ghetto chain in there and thought there is no way this is sterling. I then decided to take a look and it was in fact sterling. It was priced 12 dollars so at 50% off I paid 6 for the chain. It ended up weighing 3.05 oz. It always pays to check. Nice post Ardent. |

| I picked up about 4 lbs. of brass at a church sale last weekend. I also got a huge brass serving tray for a buck at a yard sale. I'm always looking for cheap metal I can make a profit on. Aluminum and SS cookware can be had for cheap as well. I got about 40 lbs. of Aluminum, SS, brass, and copper at another church sale a month or so ago. Towards the end most of them will do "fill a bag for a buck or two". I'm like a pig in slop!! |
Are you throwing that out? |

I love garage sales also but the price of gasoline will eat up any sraping profit these days. Town wide sales are the only way to make it work. |

| I usually look for church sales, or several sales in a small area. |

Sales are my bread and butter when it comes to making money. Ever since summers in High school I would go to garge sales. First it was for gold and silver, but as prices rose and commericals and everyone 'buying gold' the sheeple got smarter and stopped putting wedding rings out for $4 so I had to dabble into the base metals. Every Thurs-Sat. I would get the classifieds and plot out a route and attack. Subdivision sales are the best, concerning gas prices.
Yesterday on Saturday I found free pots and pans and a bed frame. Brass vavles could be brought at any prices (.10 was common and a really for that piece of junk? replies) and candlesticks were easy targets. Alos found a brass doorkick and outdoor lights. Alum bats and sheets were cheap. The one curious thing was a copper pipe for $2. It was about 8 ft. long and there was no way it was going into the Corolla. So me and the old ladies actually had to pipe cut the thing in half to fit it in. It weighed 3 pouns. Also orange extention cords were easier to find and were cheap.
Had to pass on a copper flower hanger and sheet copper bird baths because they were too risky to turn a profit ($10 and $20).
And some 18K gold hoop earings (.50) and about an 1oz. in Sterling (3.10) topped it off.
I really would like to take pics to show these item and their respective price tags if I can get the chance. |

I bought a 7 pound brass elephant at a yard sale today for $10.00. It looks something like this but nicer IMO. Maybe I'll take a picture of it someday.
The funny thing is that a well paying scap yard was only a couple of blocks down the street. But then it would be a shame to scap such a nice piece of art. |

| I must confess to still having a few of my finds as well. One is a brass bugle I just couldn't see melting down. |
Are you throwing that out? |

| I found a really nice and heavy brass candle holder in a free "after yard sale" pile on my street last weekend, scooped it roght up and added it to my meager brass pile. Check Craigslist's FREE section, sometimes popel post adds for the after yard sale stuff. |

| I bought some small junk at a sale, and visited their free box on the way out. They had a ton of ugly metal trays that are to be hung on a wall. I picked them all up thinking they were tin. Got home and they were Brass wrapped around a steel rim. Pulled the rim out and I had 8 pounds of free brass :) I checked on ebay before I scrapped them, but they didn't go for much nor receive bids. They were all stamped made in England. Search Englad Brass and you can see how ugly some of them were. |
