I just went to the bank with my paycheck the other day. It's right on the edge of a poor area of the city. Right on the edge of the inner city of Buffalo.

I usually get around $3 to $5 of pennies a week to sort but today was different. There were 45 rolls spread out on the bank tellars booth and I asked if I could buy them all. She said YES! Thanks! oh and by the way I have another $25 that a customer just brought in along with them. Bought them all and cringed when she brought out an open Brinks box. Thought a SERIOUS HOARDER just did a zinc dump but bought them anyway. What a score! Almost 40% copper with around 40 wheats including a nice uncirculated 1919 red cent and a 1917 along with a real nice 1937. The rest all 40's and 50's plus a dime and a Euro 2 cent coin. Huge number of Canadian copper, at least $2.50 face with a bunch of Kings and the majority being pre-97.

The tellar told me that people in the area (poor minority population for the most part) are bringing in huge #'s of pennies and change to buy gasoline with. It might be worth it to try the banks around the edges of the inner city for some great scores. I've never bought this many before and the bank tellar was loving me for it.

It's what I do. Going to the inner-city banks that is.... Nice finds as well.

West Seneca for now. Looking to relocate. I wish my camera could focus on this 1919 penny I got in this load. It's in outstanding condition and I'm still blown away by it.

Scan it. Works better if you have one, from what I hear.

So, is this the freakin ghetto or what? $135k around here wont buy too much of a house, let alone 2600+ square feet....

The cost of living up around Buffalo must be fairly low. I don't know of anywhere in or around Dallas where 135k would touch a 2600 sq ft house -- unless most of that 2600 had already burned to the ground. That must be nice to get a lot of house for the money up north.

Rich is a little whiskey to drink and some food to eat and a roof over your head and a fish pole and a boat and a gun and a dollar for a box of shells. Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark

The bad thing about Western NY is: No jobs, highest taxes in the nation and declining population. Government is the largest employer by far. Private sector jobs that pay well just don't exist. Young people are leaving in droves. That's why the home prices seem low. My house is assessed at $95,000 and the taxes are over $4500 a year. For Sale signs are everywhere. There are over a dozen on my street alone. Taxes are totally out of control. 8.75% sales tax, every single town, village etc has it's own police force, school district, highway dept etc. Duplicate government is everywhere and the employees are friends and family. Can't wait to get out.

Buffalo is the Ghetto for the most part. Outer suburbs can be very nice.

Have to agree with pretty much everything cupro says. When Delphi(spin off from GM) was hiring for $13 an hour factory jobs with no benefits, there was literally a line of close to a 1/4 mile long.
And talk about ghettos I think Niagara falls is even worse as at least buffalo has some better areas. They had a study or whatever a few years back and found that something like 65% of people living in the falls didn't work. They were either retired,on unemployment or welfare. How's that for pumping $$$ into the economy.
I'll just stay on my little Island and pray they don't take those tolls down
