If you are a bank and you run out of money.. who you gonna call? Not Ghostbusters!

Got an interesting call from one of my banks this morning. Seems somebody messed up their weekly coin order and sent them a bunch of boxes of nickels and only one box of pennies. They wanted to know if I could do them a huge favor and sell them several boxes of rolled pennies to get them through the week. It never hurts to help out your local banker when they are in a bind. Should generate some good karma.

Plus there is the ego factor:
When Bank of America runs out of money.. I'm the guy they call.

That's nothing, just wait until you get a call from the U.S. Mint.

"Mr. Ton, you have a call from the Secretary of the Treasury. They need you to supply Northern California with pennies for the month. Seems the San Francisco mint missed their quota."

That would be what, a couple weeks worth of zinc dumps for you eh HCBTT?

That is awesome! You might be onto something, if you control the whole penny market, they will have to pay you a premium instead of brinks or the fed :).

Im a new member/sorter, already got a few hundred pounds. you guys over a ton should form some sort of loose group. Just in case of an emergency/shtf. A club with a quanity over a 100 tons could have some pull, working together in certain situations. No rules just a alignment of like minded people who have dedicated real time and if a good oportunity came along you could come together like voltron!

Wow, thats must of been an awesome phone call. Man, when I ask for pennies I usually get a ugly face from the cashiers. But to be known as the biggest hoarder in town and to get a phone call like that would make me feel like a champion! HCBTT, do you have a lot of zinc pennies to give to them?

Ha ha...that is awesome. Send them zinc boxes/rolls but put a mark on the roll or box so that you know if you get them back on your next scheduled pickup.

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

Wow, I've gotten calls from banks saying they have pennies for me, but never asking me for pennies.

I would have charged them a delivery charge

Excellent!!! I'm sure you probably owe them a lot more favors more than they owe you. I agree it's definitely something you can be proud of. Kind of reminds me when the US Olympic Committee contacted me for help.

I had a program I created for handling the College Basketball brackets called Tourney64. They wanted something similar for handling the various brackets that they handle with some of their tournaments. I was unable to help them due to the timing of when they needed it and the busy time of the year for selling my program.

I get calls to pick up pennies from several of my banks, but this is the first time I got a call asking for pennies.

Dropped them off 8 boxes today.. all machine wrapped in N.F. String & Son paper. No way to mistake them with the plastic Brinks wrap they normally give me 24 boxes of. I was a hero at that branch today.

CopperCatcher.. seems I am never short of zinc, but constantly short of $100 bills. But if I ever do have an abundance of them I have the equipment to handle those too.. a nice Glory currency counter.

No delivery charge on this one. Telling the story to my buddies here was worth way more than any delivery fee I might have charged. I took them in on a folding hand truck. As some of the regulars at the bank were checking out my fancy alumimum hand truck I told them "I use the smaller cart for smaller deliveries!"

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
