Here's an urban legend/old wives tale to mull over...

Does a penny in the mouth help an intoxicated fellow pass a breathalizer.??

anyone ever hear that one?

I got some dusty pennies in a bag that I was allergic too. I got red eyes, started sneezing and got a sore throat. I have also had some rolled pennies that have cat and dog hair in them. If you are alergic to this it would probably do the same thing. So I for one have gotten sick from hand sorting.

In every box of pennies, there's always a bunch that are crusted with some type of oxidation or general crud. Really pretty nasty sometimes. I just keep on sorting in spite of those.

When done sorting, though, I wash my hands thoroughly and dry them. Then I use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer just to kill off anything that might be left. No need to buy the expensive stuff. Most of the dollar stores have an ample supply available. Might not have the aloe or different colors of the $5 bottles, but it's all the same stuff. Cheap insurance as I look at it.

Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply.

It might be a good idea to wash your hands well after sorting them.

I usually wear disposable gloves while sorting, and wash my hands afterwards.

It's a chore to keep my 20 month old daughter and 3 year old son from wanting to play with the pennies and put them in their mouths though.

Once in a while my son will grab a handful out one of my buckets and run off with them, so I have to chase him down and take them back before he scatters them all over the house.

My daughter is the one I have to watch for putting them in her mouth.

Those darn kids! :)

There have been times that I must tumble my cents to polish them (for my business) When I pour the barrel contents into a bowl to wash and pick out sometimes I feel sick after a few minutes. (got my hands in the water) It goes away when I am finished.
