Looks Like I may be picking up an artist (don't tell Hoardy) and have a few ?'s 1) How do you pick out the wheats?I know they are copper and it will sort them into the copper piles but how are people like TXTIM getting 5000+ wheats out of their sorts?Do you have to look through the coppers afterwards? 2) I like the artist as it has the counter. Is there anyway to just count the pennies instead of sorting them?If you just leave the penny you use to tell the machine what to look for out, will they all just pass through there without being sorted?I would use this for a penny drive that may be happening so they really don't know what I'm doing. 3)What happens if you dump a bunch of pennies in there and there is a nickel or quarter? Will that jam the machine? Thanks ahead of time for the answers. Derek

1. Yes, or during the sort you can watch. 2. The counter isn't exact....Not meant to be a counter only. 3. Yes.
Hope I helped.

To get all the wheat pennies you have to hand sort the coppers. Also hand sorting is needed to get out the copper Canadians. It goes fast though. By automating the zinc removal with a Ryedale, you just eliminated 75% or more of the hand sorting depending on the copper percentage in your area.
Put another way, pre-Ryedale the pennies in my area average about 1 wheat per 300 pennies. Post-Ryedale the pennies average about 1 wheat per 75 pennies. |

Welcome to the dark side. Better start stocking up on pennies now.
Sorting out the wheats is easy. You just turn over the copper pennies and if they have wheat ears you throw them in the wheat pile.
The counters are fine for calculating your sort percentage but are not meant as a counting device. Also, 300 coins per minute would be too slow for counting pennies for penny drives. You should get a proper high speed sorter/counter for that.
You will find many ways to jam it besides nickels and quarters. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I've learned to watch the zinc coming out of the Ryedale real careful. If I see what looks like an old penny (face up) I flip it over to see if it's wheat. Of course the zinc can come out real fast so sometimes I have to turn off the hopper before a candidate is buried, but most of the time I can do it as the pennies are coming out.
Mind you it's the very rare wheat that sorts with zinc, but they tend to be the older wheats too. I've gotten a 1909 and my only Indian Head out of the zinc rejects, along with a 1919, a 1931, 1939, and 1941.
I may miss a few if I'm not paying attention (I have small children, so I'm often not able to pay attention to whatever it is I'm trying to do) but I'm still more interested in maximizing my sorting volume than retaining ever last single copper.
I hope you get yours soon and I know you'll enjoy having it. |

| You are guys are doing very well go get 1 wheat every 75 pennies. My numbers are closer to 1 wheat for every 225 pennies searched. |
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

Yes-
Congrats on the Ryedale! You won't regret it. Crack those rolls now! The Ryedale is so fast that you'll never keep up. I grab a handfull and throw them in a tray before putting them in the Ryedale. I check for wheats, IH's and anything that may impair the machine during a run such as sticky, gummy, bent, broken or dirty pennies. It's slower but it sure saves down time from clearing jams. |

| I've created several plywood boards with popsicle stick edges so that I can spread my copper out and look for canadians and wheats. When done looking I put a plywood top on them and flip the entire "sandwich" and look over the backs of them the opposite way. Makes it really quick to look over every penny that comes out of the Ryedale. |
When my wife got after me it sounded like "Blah,Blah,Blah", but now it sounds like "Clink,Clink,Clink". Its amazing what that Ryedale can do for a hounded husband. |

OW! splinter time. I lay flat a canvas bank bag on my dining room table with the window light at the proper angle to get a reflection off the coins. Then I take 100-150 coins and spread them out flat on the bag. I take a glance and look for cents that are missing the memorial building (almost looks blank) very easy to spot wheats this way. Then I look for any coins that have that "look" to them, wheats are just a slightly different shade of brown. I flip these over to look at the back. Then I pick up the bag a pour all into an empty box or bag. Takes less then 60 sec per load.
I also pull all dimes, foreign, and k-rap coins. |

You can't go wrong- I'll buy it off you if you don't love it. I'm sure that is the sentiment of everyone who owns a Ryedale. |

Hey, Andy is a busy guy what with keeping up with all the orders and helping out us hapless sorters when we get into a jam.
He may even take a vacation one of these days or just decide he's made enough Ryedales for now and go back to sorting full time.
So you better hurry up and buy before its too late ;)
More seriously, do try to have a good dump bank lined up for getting rid of the zincs. I would be hurting if I had to roll my zinc, having a bank that will accept bagged pennies makes all the difference in my volume. Especially since they bank sends the bags to the nearest Fed Bank branch in Memphis for the exact count. This way I just weigh in the zinc to near $25 and I don't even have to count. Talk about luck!
This week I ordered another 24 boxes from my main supply bank. Here's hoping I don't get all new 2008's again. |

LOL I know approx 1/4 million pennies and still haven't taken any back to the bank.I've given maybe $50 to a few stores in my plaza but that's about it.Actually my Dad is going to open an account at a bank that will take them in bags and count them and put in your account.I figure 40lbs is about $70.If I see him twice a month I'll just load up his truck and next time I see him,he'll give me some $$$ D |

Didn't you hear misteroman.. the Ryedales are on backorder.. it is first come/first served.. better get your order in now. Once you get up to 100 boxes in backlog the Ryedale is a no brainer, just freeing up your capital is worth it.
I think 40 pounds is less than $70.. zinc is lighter. Heck, I drop off about that much at lunch every day. |

I thought it was 180 zincs= 1 pound so 40lbs= 7200 zincs or $72? Am I wrong? And what about this backorder you talk about?Maybe Ardent will bring his up from Erie to let me use for a year or so. |
