Does anyone save some food just in case? I've been thinking of some ways to store some food long term. Saving copper, silver and gold is fine, but I still would not want to venture from home and family in a SHTF situation in order to spend it for food / supplies.
i agree. i definitely plan to start stockpiling food, you know buy a small quantity of non perishable items every time i go shopping until i have a nice sized inventory. especially with the insane increase in food prices over the past couple years...its only going to get worse.
I'd like to stockpile a years worht of food for my family but I have to get my wife on board first.
She thinks I'm being paranoid and believing in conspiracy theories when I try to talk to her about doing this.
I tried to have a similar conversation with my wife the other night. Her comment? "Don't you do enough worrying about this for the both of us?"
"Rich," the Old Man said dreamily, "is not baying after what you can't have. Rich is having the time to do what you want to do. Rich is a little whiskey to drink and some food to eat and a roof over your head and a fish pole and a boat and a gun and a dollar for a box of shells. Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark
there are too wild Indians... there are too wild Indians... there are too wild Indians...-----still taunted
It just makes sense to have some food in the house. Store what you eat. Eat what you store. If your wife has an attitude then you call it "buying extra when it's on sale".

I'd just explain it to her in the sense that you always have food prices locked in for a year if there's a sudden increase if gas goes to $200 a barrel. Everything will cost more to the consumer. Not only that but a natural disaster or trucking strike or anything of the type that caused deliveries to be severely delayed would cause price gouging. Not only that but I'd explain to her that buying in bulk now will save you a lot of money. If you hit Sam's Club and buy cases of products you normally use the cost per ounce is usually much lower than buying a single can at a time [I worked for Sams doing competitor comparisons for 2 years ;O)]
As long as everything you buy has a pretty long shelf life it doesn't make sense NOT to have something to fall back on if you can afford to do it.
I've started putting stuff up in the last few weeks and I'm getting some shelving built next week to store more. My goal is to have enough canned goods, dehydrated vegetable protein [which I already use in 1/2 my meals] powdered drink mixes, etc for 6 months. I have enough PM's to equal 6 months of my pay currently, once I get both food and PM's to 6 months I'll start increasing them on a 1 to 1 basis until I get to a years worth.
Once you have your 6 month or 1 year supply you should pay close attention to your dates and use things before they expire and rotate new items in to replace them.
