I know most of you are from the US but I am wondering how Canadians sort.
I went through my first $35 Canadian of rolls this weekend. I got about 12-13 82-96, 4-5 pre77, .75 78-79 .75 80-81, and 1 US CU, per roll.
I hand rolled each group (shot gun rolls) and packaged up the zinc( or steel).
My big plan would be to split a Ryedale with a freind afew months down the line. Until then it is hand sort for me. I know once I get a machine I will collect that copper and will not be able to break down the wieghts easly. Now I am marking each roll either 77 pre, 78-79, 80-81 or 82-96.
What do other do? 82-96 copper is only worth .0209 a cent at coinflation today. It is nice we Canadian had copper till 96 but man is it hard to sort.

I went to the bank the other day and bought $40 in nickels (which only gave up 2.5 rolls of 100 Ni) and $50 of pennies. Tonight I decided to deal with some pennies. I went through $10 worth in which 85% was Cu. Yahoo!. Still have another $40 to get through but this was nice. Even scored one wheat.
A lot of the rest of the rolls are looking like the ones I just went through so keep you fingers crossed for more 85% Cu.

Very true. I am just starting out so I will keep updating this thread as I progress. Hopefully more will join in soon also.
I think I am only going to be seeing about 35-40% Cu over the long haul.

Yes a major PIA but I am thinking to break it down at least Can Pre79 Cu, Can 80-96 and US Pre 82. due to the closeness of Cu weight.
Nickels are kicking butt. I am only saving the .999 Ni for now but at around $.12 each the profit adds up fast.

I'm in Michigan - but have been going to Canada for over 1 year now....the .999Ni for SW Ontario was and still is hunted to death....I quit when the % dropped below 10%....was about 25% one year ago!
Canadian Cu still running 35% to 40%.
I only sort it as Copper and NOT COPPER.....return NOT CU. Keep Cu all in one hoard.
Figure the Cu will be sold on a weight basis some day....why bother sorting into type of Cu????
In rough terms....due to mixed weights of coppers....it turns out to be about 164 mixed coppers per pound....I've done this audit several times.....I just assume 164 coins makes a pound.
I guarantee that 1 pound of coins is a pound of coins!!!!
Why bother sorting by type of copper? Just hoard pounds.... |

PS - since the exchange rate is about $1CND = $1UDS.....it is a better deal to hoard US at this time....about $1.50USD makes a pound while $1.64CND = one pound. A 10% more expensive hoard for Canadian.....but added advantage of no Melt/Scrap ban here in the USA....
I hoard both....have several tons of each. |

This is my first post but I have been lurking on these forums for a few months. At first I thought 'these folks are crazy' but now that I have started to hoard I can see how addictive it is.
Anyway, I Guess I got lucky 2 weeks ago. I found a guy that sold me $325.00 of pennies that he had hoarded back in 1981 for face value with the exception of 100 rolls of 1981 still in the original bank wrapper that I paid a premium for. In the process of sorting by year now because I am also a coin collector so I am looking for some of the older dates in good condition.
Hopefully we will see a steel penny in Canada soon and these will become meltable coins.

Hi
I am sure I have all the maple leaf king series many times over because I have some rolls labeled 30 KG, 40 KG and 50's KG. I bought a Players tobacco tin filled with pennies form 1973 and earlier years ago and rolled them up.
Some are AU to EF if I remember right.
Good thing I label my rolls.

Thanks for the info on CA pennies. I've picked up a couple of rolls going through US pennies, mostly in 77-97 range, but as early as 1940s. Maybe I shouldn't have been tossing the CA nickels. |

Welcome UT1 - good to have another Canadian here. Good score on the old rolls! I try to have some dump coins in the Jeep when I go looking to buy. Was at a TD where they pleaded coin shortage because I cleaned them out last week. I offered and they accepted a trade like you did. I scored a whole bunch (9 complete rolls) of pure nickel, some labeled by year. Love that presorted coin - as long as it is the old stuff not someone's dump of course. |

I too am in MI. I finally sorted all the Canadian I have been accumulating. I am getting 80% Cu. I was quite surprised, I knew the Canadian Cu's percentages were better than the U.S., but not that good, and the pre '82s out number the later ones. I only sort pre '82 and '82-'96 for now... They will probably all end up in the same bucket soon enough.

My limited sampling shows that the population of American pennies circulating in Canada appears to be much older then the population of American pennies circulating in the US. Perhaps the pennies go North to retire?
I am not surprised to see the population of Canadian pennies circulating in the US might be older then the population of Canadian pennies circulating in Canada. Canadians love to go south in thier retirement years. Perhaps old pennies like to travel too. |

Congrats on getting all those old coppers at the bank. Hope you get a chance to go get the rest of them. |
