I have been lurking around this site for a few days and it has been getting my iterests going as I have collected coins for over 30 years.
I thought I would share with you a story about a purchase I made about a week ago. I went into this old coin store I deal with on a weekly bases and asked him if he had any old copper he wanted to get ride of. Out popped a box lots of losse pennies and rolls and rolls of pennies from the 60's. Alot were BU's ( Canadian) from the mid 60's. I made the trade I paid $150 for about $50 face in the box and he threw in a 1925 silver $1 and a silver US .25$.
The whole lot was about 95% Cu and made out like a bandit it had wheats also! About 400 I got and 189? Indian head and a 31s and an 09 S. Oh the victory!
Right now I have about 5000 Canadian pennies and about 1500 US 65% Wheats!

Why would the dealer not know there was an 09s in there?Especially if he was a small one you would think he had more time to sort things. D |

| I think this guy is trying to make friends. What Misteroman said is true! Why would a dealer not know what he gave away? Are you sure this guy is a dealer or you traded a kid who took from his dads collection just to buy candy from you??? Sorry dude, just dosen't add up for me. |

Well, that sort of thing does happen occasionally. I bought a thing on Ebay, described as "87 ozt 999 silver ingot" that looked like it had been molded in a cast iron drain pipe. I estimated the size from the picture and computed the density and it came out right on 10.5, which means silver. I bought it for $1100 and got five peace dollars in the deal. When the shipment arrived it turned out to be 100 troy ounces, not 87. And when I sent it to a refiner it turned out to be 98% silver, not 99.9.
This seller knew what a troy ounce is, so he was not entirely stupid. So how did he make a 13 ounce mistake in weighing an ingot? |

| Dealers make mistakes, even smaller ones that arent as busy. I bought a bunch of Morgan dollars at wholesale from a dealer about a month ago. One of the dollars was an 1899-P semi-key date that trends around $200 and I got it for around $15 or $16. They missed it plain and simple so it's possible the dealer missed the 1909. |

Mistakes can and do happen. Last year I opened up a little ziplock baggie of wheat cents and poured it out on my desk because I needed the baggie to ship off 2500 copper cents. Late that night I decided to take a look at the wheat cents before tossing them in a bag of wheat cents I was getting ready to ship out since there were only 20 of them and I figured it wouldn't take me long to check the dates before tossing them in the counter. The firse few were common dates from the teens and 20's. The next one was a 27-S. Then I picked up one and it was dated 1909-S!!! I thought Wow, this really is my lucky night.. that's at least a $100 coins. Slowly I turned it over.... Not even daring to hope.....
And there was the V.D.B.!!!!! I had a really hard time going to sleep that night. I had been looking at that hole in my penny book for 35 years. I had never expected to find one. I didn't remember where I got that little baggie of wheat cents or if it had been sitting on that shelf for 3 months or 3 years. But most likely I paid 3 cents each for them! Dealers always give me large and small packages of wheat cents and shoot me a price because they know I will usually buy them. So some dealer had sold me an XF 1909-S VDB for 3 cents! |

| Dealers are human too. That and the fact that he is Canadian makes this story very believable. Thanks for sharing and congrats on the find! |

Thanks guys.
Yes the dealer is Canadian as am I. He runs the local coin/stamp/plastic models shop. These coins have been with him for about 10 years. He was not interested in sorting just selling which was great for me.
As I said I have been collecting coins for 30 odd years and this is the first time I have done this well.
I would like to thank this site for giving me the idea of getting back into coppers. For the last few years I have only focused on silver coins.
Kind Regards Steiner |

Welcome to the site Steiner. Great story!
If I lived where you do I would get a Ryedale and be sorting pennies and nickels like crazy. The percentages are still really good up there. |

I went through about $35 rolls of copper on the weekend as an experiment. I came away with about 40% CU and 2 wheats not bad for Canadian rolls.
My friend and I are thinking we will split the cost of the Ryedale and get one sent up we are just this week talking to our respective banks about constant supply of copper.
The nickles are going fast I rarely find them in pocket change but we will give a few rolls a try also.

| Yeah.. I would have loved to have been in on the nickel play a year ago. 40% copper is still way better than what we get down here. Great idea splitting the machine with your buddy. One more thing to consider is a plan to get rid of the 60% of pennies that are not keepers. Find out if your banks will take them loose in a bag, if they have a coin counter, or if you must roll them to return them. |

I beliege that mistakes are made. Sometimes when I go to a bank looking for halves I will get some rolls that the tellers have already been sorted. I did that today and got a 40% half.
A while back stopped in at a drive by bank and asked for halves. The teller informed me that they had three regulars that sort and dump there. I got several rolls anyway. Two of them were marked "40%" I opened them and sure enought they were. |

I'm thinking you should stop by that bank and pick up their rejects more often. Awfully nice of them to sort them for you. |
