And by gold I definately mean copper. So when my step mom moved in with my dad back in 1993 she brought with her two glass jugs. Now, these jugs are of pretty good size, if anyone has ever seen those giant plastic coke or pepsi banks thats about how big these are. They are about 3 inches shorter but about 2 inches wider at the base so I'm sure they would hold much more than those banks would. One jug was completely full of pennies and the other was about a quarter full. Well, the second jug is just now about 1 tenth from being full. This is after 15 years.
By my calculations, at least the bottom half of the jug that was full when she brought them should be 100% copper. I really want to offer her a deal. If she lets me borrow those jugs for just a minute I will guarantee they will both be returned completely full of pennies. They might be zinc but they will still be full of pennies. My biggest problem is we were never really that close and she may want the old ones in there for sedimental value or something. I'm just not sure how to go about this.

Hard to say given that we don't know her personality. Best course is usually the truth, however. She is family after all. Just tell her you want to sort them for copper and you would keep half for your trouble and she could keep half if she wants them. She might let you keep all of the copper. |

Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark

You might just offer to count them up and pay her in folding money for them. Many people let pennies pile up in jugs and don't relish the idea of rolling them all or giving CoinStar 8.9% to count them. They will often jump at the chance to convert them into folding money. |

I thought of that but she is one of those decorative type of people so I think she actually likes the decorative qualities of two giant glass jugs full of pennies. If that makes any sense at all. |

Then swap her new shiny ones.. they will look better.
I kind of like the decorative look of 19 gallon tubs full of copper too. |

Ask her if you can sort them for wheats! You have a wheat book and you are just missing a few years. Tell her you will refill the jugs when you are done or, you will pay her in cash. Tell her since she is family, you will do it for free, that coinstar charges 7%.
Or, you could steal the 2 jugs and sort them and bring them back when your step mom and dad are on vacation |

Yea, I'll just swap everything out in an hour and return the jugs exactly how they were, only with much less metal value contained within them. The funny thing is it would probably work but I think I'll just talk to my dad and see what he says. I can see me doing that sneaky swap and then one day I find out she really was keeping then for the old ones. "Hey Doug, any reason why those jugs of pennies don't have anything older than 1982 in them, I could swear I started filling them before that." |

RED TEAM GO, RED TEAM GO! I have the go ahead to sort the giant penny jars. I swapped out the newer one of the two last night and will have to find time to sort it between work and cutting wood. I would guess that one would run about 30% since she probably started filling it around 1989. The other one, however, should run significantly higher since she probably started filling it sometime in the 70s. |

Play it straight! Why take a chance on getting strained relations with your stepmom over $15 in copper pennies, or $50. It just ain't worth it!!!! It's only money!!! |
