| I keep a spreadsheet with columns for number sorted, 1959-82 Cu cents, Canadian cents, and Wheat cents. I also keep notes on it for pickup banks and dump banks as well as special finds like 2-cent Euros, counter-stamped pennies, etc. |
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

| I have an excel file with information for every box I have sorted. Where it came from, date of pick up, number Cu, percentage Cu, type of rolls, and interesting finds. I hope to be able to analyze the data over the next few years to determine the trend of the overall Cu percentage. |

I like numbers too, so much that I'm taking a Calculus class and have this wishful idea to actually complete a degree in mathematics.
However when it comes to sorting my only goal is to get as much copper as quickly as possible.
Seeings how I am always sorting with the distractions of my children underfoot and my wife wanting me to do more chores around the house (read constantly interrupted), I dont' keep any records at all. I just break rolls, run the Ryedale, and bag zinc for however long I can at one sitting.
Tonight I've got about $150 in unsorted pennies if I can get through them, and it would be nice to get the zinc weighed and bagged for deposit Friday. I should be able to do a few drive buys then too, but I'll have to take off work a bit early and hit up another town on my way home since I depleted the town I work in already this week.
The only thing I've done to somewhat keep track of this is to open a separate checking account that I use only for depositing zinc and withdrawing cash to buy pennies. When this account gets to zero I'll close it and know I've sorted hoarded right at $3,000 in copper, since that's about how much I initially set aside for this venture.
Well, I'm also keeping my hoard in easily measured units like 50 lb bags or 100 lb pails, but that's as close to record keeping as I get.
Yes it would be intellectually interesting to keep statistical records on each box/roll of coins, but when I'm not sorting or doing family things or commuting or at work I find time to work math problems, both from my Calculus class and from some the Schaums Outline Series I'm trying to finish before I die.
I don't even read all that much anymore, just try and work more math problems. Now what I'll do if I ever manage to get a degree in Math I don't know,
But at the rate I'm going it will never happen, so I don't have to worry about it :)

I have a very basic excel spreadsheet where I use 1 column for each day and record the # of coppers from each box sorted. At the bottom are formulas that calculate total boxes sorted, total copper coins recovered, and copper % for the day. Sometimes late at night you just don't want to do all that math.. LOL. I also have 1 row at the bottom where I record the # or "darn dimes" Percentages have been trending down by about 1% over the last year. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |

| I too also run an excel sheet. Mine consists of date of sort, amount sorted, copper saved, and percentages. Then it branches out from daily, monthly, and year-to-date. In addition to this, I keep a hard copy of the days I purchase cents. I also am working on keeping inventory of copper boxes and number of dated rolls. A nice excel formula gets track of this with each new addition. Another enjoyable part of hoarding. |

I keep a spreadsheet. I dont always get everything, but its a rough estimate. I'd rather be sorting than counting for a stupid log anyway. I weigh the boxes, so I know about how much there is to begin with. |

| I forgot I do have lists of friendly/unfriendly banks, and the day the brink's man comes. As well as what banks are good for drive bys. |

| I hand sort and hardly find enough time for that. I do carry a notebook and make entries of when the banks send back coins, when deliveries come, etc. I keep bank phone numbers, head tellers names or friendly tellers, I keep track of when the last bag of treats was to spread them out a little(mostly reward the generous banks and the counters.) IMO a notebook is a must if you are forgetful or just extremely busy. |

I too use a good ol'e pen and paper to track: What I bought weight of $25 boxes locations and dates of purchase wheat-canadian-s mark- "other" coins copper #s and % I also write down various "on the ground" finds or stuff I find in change or my drawer at work. I should keep more info about tellers and vault people but I use one main pickup bank and they always have what I want. No need to order.
and yes a notebook is really good to keep.
