What do you all do with your canadian pennies? Do you keep the copper ones separate from your US pennies? Here in Michigan, probably 5% of the pennies are Canadian. Is it currently legal to melt the Canadian copper??

I do the same thing Misteroman does. The ones that my Ryedale separates as copper I leave in the copper pail. I don't think this should hurt anything. 10 or 15 years from now when I am selling them as copper bullion I don't think it will matter whether they are American or Canadian.
From what I understand any Canadian penny before 1996 is copper. Please correct me on that if I am wrong. |

I throw the heavy, pre-1980 canadians in with the rest of my copper, and return everything else to the bank. Here in Michigan, there is at least 2-5 Canadians in every roll.
And yes, all Canadian cents before 1996 are copper, although since 1980 they only contain about 75% of the copper content of our pre-82's. |

| I keep all Canadian cents and separate them out by copper content (i.e. 1942-1979, 1980-81, 1982-1996, 1997-present). I dont put the counts in my hoard code though. They are more or less just sitting in containers for now until I decide what to do with them. I only get about 5-7 per box of pennies. |
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

| I just seperate them for now. I thought about trying to trade a few rolls for coppers at the flea market. We get alot of Canadians here in FL, so the coin dealer there might be willing. |

| I sort them almost like CoinHunter53562. I sort them when I have about $10 face. I do two different sorts; first I sort into kings, copper, and zinc, then I sort the copper into 1953-1979, 1980-81, 1982-1996. |

I'm in Michigan too so the Candian penny is almost a 2nd Currency here. It used to be a game of 'Hot Potato' when the Can. dollar was weak and we tried to get rid of them ASAP. But even with the stronger CAN. dollar people still have the ASAP thinking. So sometimes CWR I get are pure CAN pennies or 75% CAN with 25% USA to show they didnt try to pull a fast one.
I too sort by Pennies up to 79, 80-96, 97- present, kings, and birds (Rockdoves). But I would refrain on throwing them in with your US Copper. I believe CAN pennies are 97.5% copper and have many weights. In my personal opinion I believe this and the fact you *may* be able to melt them gives them a silght premium.
Its like saying 'I'll throw this Can. junk silver with my US junk silver because its all silver bullion in the end' if you mix the stuff up. Not a good idea in my opinion.

| I agree with Robarons, I keep them separate feeling they should have a premium being they are not banned for melt in the US. I sort mine by Kings, 1953-1979, and 1980-1996. I do not feel the 1980-1981 are worth keeping separate as the difference is one thousanth of a cent. Minnesota is the same as Michigan, lots of Candadian coins mixed in. |

Here in Mississippi the Canadian pennies are rare enough that I put all of the, zinc and copper, into a separate baggie. Along with the 2 cent Euro, a couple of British coins, a coin from Ecuador, and a couple of Bahamian coins I've found.
If I miss some in my copper they stay in my copper. If I miss them in my zincs they get returned to the bank. |

All my foreign finds, including Canadians, go into a bag. Any that the Ryedale sorts stay where they are sorted if I don't see them.

What are they going to do, send mounties to get you?
There was a guy in the 50s who made a living counterfeiting British sovereigns. He was so good at it that he advertised. The Brits were never able to bust him because he wasn't on British soil and it's not a crime to counterfeit British coins outside British jurisdiction. Same goes for Canadian coins in the US, or US coins in Canada. |

I've got all my Canadian pennies sorted by 'date range', and most of it rolled as well. I'm just trying to figure out what to do with all of my Canadian pennies dated 97+...
I figure I have about $5-$10 in Canadian coinage, and a lot of paper CDN as well.
Mebbe I'll head up to Vancouver for Canada Day. I hear it's like a whole different country up there. Do a little shopping - get a suit like the ones Don Cherry wears...

1. Roll the steel canadian pennies in a few at a time with your US zincs. Don't do solid rolls of CDN. Dump at bank. That is where you got them right?
2. We do not dress like Don Cherry and I'm sure he has his suits custom tailored. Why I know not :(
