Too good to be true for the prices these people are asking? Or is the actual gold content so small that the prices reflect the actual content? This is the first listing that really caught my eye and raised my eyebrow (boy, did that hurt!):

And if this stuff is legit, is it worth buying in small-dollar quantities, or would fractional coins be better in the long run as an investment? Half my brain is thinking that getting gold in any affordable quantity is good, the other half is thinking that unless the buyer can recognize an item as real gold, then the item isn't worth it.

For that matter, this is the first time I've seen 9-karat gold:

I say no on the gold filled. Buy fractional coins if your budget allows.

Plain and simple.

I used to think that gold coins were better, but then I thought that if TSHTF, then a lady might trade more for the jewelry than the gold value.

The lady might trade a bag and a half for a gold bracelet that weighs 1 oz, or she might trade 1 bag for a 1 oz coin.

Maybe this wouldnt be the case, I dont know.

But I think the real question would be how jewelry pieces could be readily identified as gold. Anyone know of any easy ways to do this?

"Gold filled" means they bond a layer of karat gold to a layer of base metal, usually 1/20 by weight, sometimes 1/10. The jewelry is then formed from that and stamped "1/20 12KGF" Be very suspicious of 12K gold because it is almost always filled. A gram of scrap has 1/20 gram of karat gold which at 12K would be 50% (12/24). So 1 gram X 1/20 X 12/24 = .025 gram pure gold. At $30/gram ($930/oz) that would be worth 75 cents, minus refining fees. My refiner pays a flat rate of $30/lb for filled scrap, which is generous of them.

A penny sorted is a penny earned!
