I picked up 3 boxes of dimes to search for silver and was skunked. I did just an edge of coin sort to check for the solid silver edge. For sorting dimes I find this way ALOT quicker than eyeballing every date on the tiny dimes. My ony worry is the tarnish on a silver dime will make it look like a clad dime. Who knows-I may have missed a silver. Dose anybody sort dimes and do you find a silver dime or two?

Seeing how the percentage is like 1 silver for every 10,000 coins I would never do it.

That was about my average on dimes. I searched like 925 dollars worth and got one dime.

I just wanted to find one :). I did maybe one box after that with no silver.

I don't actively pursue dimes but I take CWR when my regular banks have them and want to get rid of them. I picked up $200 worth the other day, along with several other coins at one of my banks. Found 2 silver dimes in them. Almost missed one of them while edge checking.. it was dark gray rather than silver. I have a little advantage.. I just toss all the dimes in the hopper of one of my automatic rolling machines to reroll them after I am done looking at them. I like getting silver at face value but the percentages on dimes are not high enough to justify chasing them. I prefer pennies since I pretty much always find keepers in those.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I search bags and average about 6 per $1000 bag.
I got one bag recently that had a nice dump of 44 mercs and 70 silver rosies.
I also found a seated 1874 dime in Dec. They are my favorites - up there with halves.

Beer is my currency.

I get rolls now and then. So far I've found 1 Mercury and a '64 Rosie. I get Quarters sometimes too, but have been skunked to date.

Are you throwing that out?

Actually found a silver dime in just the 12 rolls I swapped for at work. Then I found another silver dime in a brinks wrap penny roll! Much harder to find silver dimes in penny rolls.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

By box I presume you mean a $25 box of rolled coins. You must remember that in most instances any rolled coins have been dumped into a bank, rolled there or sent out for rolling. This means those coins are for sure the remains of countless searches. Always attempt to purchase coins by the bag. The reason is some banks have bags sitting for years in a vaults corner just waiting for something. Might have been there for many years and not gone through numerous machines. Rolled coins are always the remnants of searches and machine rolling which does no coin any good.

Dimes do not come in $25 boxes.

CWR - Customer Wrapper Roll. Dime bags can be bought from banks with coin machines. HoardCopperByTheTon, I guess you are right. ::::CLARIFICATION:::: A box of dimes is not $25. Better? Nitpicker....Hehe.

I remember asking at a local bank for a bag of halves they had just pulled from the machine. It was bleeding silver. They told me they could not give it to me because it had to match with a printout of what the machinehad counted that day. Oh Well!

Tell them go ahead and match it.. and then give you a call and you will be a nice guy and come pick it up so they won't have to ship it.

NABD.. Those $25 dime boxes are the new "short boxes" for guys that want to move up from the lower denominations but don't want to drop $250 or $500 a whack for what is most likely going to be a dud box.

I can see it now, "Let me get a box of pennies, and one of those "short" dime boxes." You think you get odd looks now....

Since the beginning of April, I've found 8 Mercury and 25 Roosevelt Dimes just by going through boxes at work.. I also got 8 Washington Quarters, 1 Walking Liberty Half, 2 Franklin Halves, and 2 40% Kennedys.. There is a bag also that I've yet to go through but I'm assuming at least 50 silvers are in there.. I looked on the bottom, and there are like five right next to each other. So someone must have put in at least a roll.

Oh, and I get them all at FACE :P I guess working at a bank has its perks!

OK, OK so when I said $25 box I was referring to pennies (cents). If your bank does not have bags of coins, then just try other banks. Many do for businesses.

Now that I've transferred branches, no, not really. I even have someone on the forum come in a buy pennies. We're not doing much, but it's a newer bank with a small coin vault, so I can't order too many.. But I don't get any hassle really. Some jokes here and there but that's about it.
