I am sort of new to sorting pennies, i have sorted through about 200$ face, and i search through the 25$ boxes. I was wondering if there was a better way of getting pennies to sort, because only every 1/3 time is the box mixed pennies, it is almost always all new pennies and i look and i ask my cashier for another box and they always just get mad at me and it is a hassle, so i was just wondering if there is a easier/better way to get pennies to sort. thanks

welcome. You could do drive bys at local banks and ask for 5-10 dollars worth. They usually have that in CWR (customer rolls) Those copper %s are usually higher than boxes. As for the boxes, some are skunks and others are good. Usually it is best to have primary pick up bank(s) and primary dump bank(s) thus eliminating the hassle and annoyance of returning whole boxes to tellers who just gave you the boxes. It takes a while to get in the groove. Good Luck.

first off welcome to the site. Also if you have a little extra money, just put the new ones in your closet it or somewhere. You don't want to make the tellers mad though,it will really put a damper on things Derek |

Buy some inexpensive scales.
A box of pure zinc will weigh about 14.2 pounds (~13.8 lbs for the zinc and less than 1/2 pound for the box and paper rolls), whereas a box of pure copper should weigh ~19.6 pounds.
It's enough difference to feel when you pick up the boxes.
I should know, I picked up 17 boxes of pure zinc today myself.
Also, get a separate bank for dumping the pennies than you use for picking up pennies.
And tell the tellers you collect old pennies. It may help.
Or not.
Good luck, and welcome to the forum. |
