How much weight can a basement floor hold (per square foot) without problems??

I was considering building an 8x8 "pool" out of landscape timbers in my basement (line it with 3/4 inch plywood)fill it up with pennies.

Depends on the thickness of the concrete and whether it was reinforced with wire or rebar. As long as you kept the depth to 4 feet or so it should be OK. There are also ways when constructing your pool to spread the load out over a larger area.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I was wondering something like this as well, but with regard to a 55-gallon drum to hold pennies. Does the drum have to be metal, or will a plastic one work as long as the weight is uniformly distributed (which it would be if it was filled with just pennies)?

There is no way that it can be moved by hand at all!

You're not going to get a good answer to your question without someone taking a look at your site in person... There are far too many variables in floor materials, thickness, and what's underneath the floor. i'll say i think it's pretty darn unlikely that your idea would cause a problem unless the ground underneath the house is very unstable, or the basement floor was very poorly poured.

Considering Verizon Business service? Perhaps you'd like to consider a nice drain cleaner enema instead?

Did any of you consider using sandbags inwhich to store your pennies? The site in the link also has cotton bags but sandbags may prove more practical. You must be logged in to see this link. Unless you have a forklift handy I wouldn't store them too heavy and make it hard to move them.

I wonder if their cotton bags are strong enough to hold $50 in pennies. I am guessing not since most coin bags are canvas, but man the prices sure are right. The sandbags would hold them, but I am not sure they have the "curb appeal" of a cotton bag.

I think he was going for the visual of the big pool of pennies. Looks more impressive than if they are in bags or containers. Besides, you can't "swim" in them unless they are loose.

My basement flooded with over 6 feet of water. The concrete supported it. I think this weighed more than most of you will ever collect in pennies. Of course I could be wrong.

I think you'd be more bouyant than the pennies, and float on top, rather than swim in them...unless your as dense as lead...or GOLD

More to the point, what you need to look for is the "point load" rating for whatever the slab construction is, as opposed to the "live load rating" This is the case for wood floors anyway.

Disclaimer: Jack is not a structural engineer, any advice given by Jack is simply off-the-cuff thoughts. You should take any suggestions from Jack with a grain of salt. Jack has been known to do horrendously stupid things from time to time,(such as using H2SO4 when he SHOULD have been using HCL), you should consider this when taking any advice from Jack.

Jack hoards copper pennies in preparation for the collapse of the US economy, this should give you further insight into Jack's expertise on most any matters, including but not limited to: concrete floor strength, investment choices, dating, politics, religion, sports wagering, weight loss.

Sand bags!

That seems like a great idea. I am almost positive the bags would be strong enough for pennies.
They could be restacked/relocated if necessary. I built a shooting range in the backyard with sandbags and have 75 left over. Might be a good experiment to fill one and see how much they hold.
