Long story short, got a call today that my pick up bank was trying to call me.I get ahold of the head tellers son(customer and kind of friend)
Says some guy brought in $275 worth of pennies and if I want them? That was kind of a dumb question.Turns out it was a church penny drive.I go to the bank and the lady was " I THOUGHT OF YOU BECAUSE OF ALL THE WHEATS!!!!!!!!!!!"I told her if they ever get loads of coins like that, as a favor to THEM I would take them off their hands. While loading them onto my truck, my buddy drops a box and some rolls and loose ones fall out.Didn't see any wheats but saw copper so was ok.I get back to the pizzeria and look through the mangled box and a few rolls and nothing.Hmmmm what was that lady talking about? An hour or so later I pop open another box and had a lot of pretty grain staring at me!!!!!Out of the 11 rolls that were open at that end,9 had wheats on the end.I take the box in to show the guys and decide to open a roll. You guessed it ALL WHEATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!there was actually a couple early mems in there but who cares lol.open 2 more rolls same thing 40-45 wheats per roll.seen MANY 20's and a few teens and even a couple of steels.
Needless to say I'm now going to have fun the next hour and WILL give a report when I'm done.I do think about 10 rolls out of the box will be regular though as they are different wraps.
Wish me luck
D

All sorted, had to take a few breaks in there for things.Just found another 09 in the 2nd to last roll. The roll I saved for last had a 14,16,17,and a 19 but no MM's.Going to count quick by just counting the zincs first maybe 200 and the coppers next 250.So I believe it is fair to say that there will be approx 80% wheats in the box.Should be able to hold the record for awhile with those #'s
And hoard, for you, the 5th or 6th last roll...1 darn dime and it was the ugliest dime I've ever seen.

Also forgot to mention,I bought 1764 wheats off of craigslist today for $60.Was asking 70 I offered 50,he said he had an offer of $55 so I told him $60 and sold.He said people kept emailing him to go through it and find certain dates and he said he told them he wasn't looking through it that it was wheats he and his girl saved from change for the last 8 or so years.Seen a few steels and some 30's peeking in the bucket, so should be a fairly unsearched lot.I told him if I found a big one I would call him and take care of him!
A pretty decent day so far for a penny hound!!!!!

Glad to see it happen to one of us, instead of an unknowing customer who would just spend them back into circulation.

Although to be fair most people would keep wheat cents these days I think.

Great find, congratulations!

Yeah can't believe the #'s of zincs when I started counting them.I looked down and thought maybe 200 or so but as you see,it wasn't even close.
A few of the things that really surprised me:
1)No Indians.Seeing as how about 30 of the rolls we almost all wheats and the couple mems that were in there were 59 and 60's and bu,Thought there would at least be one indian somewhere.
2) I would get a roll of 49 wheats and then a 200X cent.Where did that one come from?
3)Thought I would get at least one better date. The VDB was great don't get me wrong but thought I had a good chance at getting a 14-d, 31-s, or something like that.
The indian thing was the one I thought I surely had.

I had to look back through this post to see if it was started for Poisson d'Avril. But it was not. So, I don't think we are April fish (see the term above) in saying congratulations on such a find. Truly a treasure. Mistero, have you an estimate of the grade of the 1909 VBD and do you have an estimated worth?

Heck, reading this post makes me want to make a bank run for some pennies and nickels.

"Rich," the Old Man said dreamily, "is not baying after what you can't have. Rich is having the time to do what you want to do. Rich is a little whiskey to drink and some food to eat and a roof over your head and a fish pole and a boat and a gun and a dollar for a box of shells. Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark
