Hey All, Just started my hoard and I'm learning a lot on these boards. Thanx for all the info everyone.

At some point I read a strain that pertained to 1959 pennies and I'm wondering if I need to be pulling these babies for further inspection? If so, what am I looking for?

I also seem to be reading a lot of little blips on the 's' mint mark.

Sorry if these questions seem ignorant, but I'm just getting started and I'd rather not do to much re-sorting if I find out I might be missing something important.

Thanx again 'n happy hunting.

First, welcome. '59's first year for memorials. Some save them because they are just that. I save them, in with all the other coppers...."S" mints tend to be lower mintages. It is also the mint mark for more recent proof sets. Hope I helped. You will find a lot of people on here with a lot of good, (mostly, hehe), information.

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

Mark, the 1959 as mentioned is the first year of the Memorial series, which they minted only in Denver and Philly. The biggest find in that year is one with a wheat back. The say some are out there. Here is a link for a list of errors concerning pennies.

Every time I find a 1959, it seems that they're facing me. As I slowly turn them, hoping to see the wheat backs, I hear an imaginary drum roll, and my heart beats faster. It's like having 40-50 mini-lotteries (and heart attacks) per sorting session. I've seen many hundreds, if not thousands of 1959s by now, and unless they're in AU-BU condition, they're just thrown in with the average/bulk Cu. They actually seem more common than most, though I haven't checked the actual mintage numbers.

Can't add to the thread but MA1982 that is the best quote I have seen in a long time.

The difference between an optimist and a pessimist is that the pessimist is better informed.

Thanx No82s
Now how do you suppose Old Ben knew about the Patriot Act all those years ago?

Ben, with the benefit of a good read of history, could see how governments evolve to displace liberty. He would be appalled with the alphabet soup of Departments and Ministries that the US Government has become. He'd probably be more appalled that citizens demand that the government must fix everything.

Trust the government? Ask an Indian.

Most citizens do not understand that the 'government' is made up of the laws that 'govern' the people and not our elected officials. These citizens need to take a more active role in making these laws and electing the right officials to represent them. If the 'system' is already too far gone then sometimes a revolt is in order.

It might be time to move this rant to another forum. I think we lost the original subject somewhere along the line. My bad.

Two years ago, I bought 50 rolls of BU 1959 P Lincolns in anticipation of the 2009 centennial anniversary of the Lincoln cent. I paid 85 Cents per roll and the few I've cracked open are dazzlers with very few carbon spots and other detracting marks.

I'm told that there's going to be a much greater demand for 1909 Lincs (already started) as well as those from 1959 (changeover year to the Memorial) and the series of commem cents that are going to be placed into circulation in 2009. There'll be 1st year, 50th year and 100th year sets put together by the TV hucksters and back-of-magazine and coupon insert companies. Purely speculation on my part, but a minimal investment anyway. Even if I can't triple my money on these next year, I have some sharp looking 50 year old copper at a tasty price.

Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply.
