Maybe I'm premature in asking this since I haven't yet gotten a Ryedale, but how are 1943 pennies sorted? Is there just a way to configure copper as the default and then everything else is rejected, whether it's zinc or steel?

My experiences with 1943 Zinc plated steel is that they are rejected while sorting for copper, and also rejected while sorting for zinc. So you usually will find them while looking through the "Hodge Podge" that is left after these two passes. Andy

I finally ran a load of pennies through a zinc standard.

The pennies had already been sorted with the normal copper standard, but I was able to pull out quite a few additional coppers on the second sort.

Part of the reason was that I had been having numerous discriminator jams and I think this caused some coppers to fall into the zinc.

I broke down and dissembled the hopper/feeder and cleaned the insides like Andy says to in the service manual.

This made a huge difference in reducing the jams.

And best of all, during the zinc resort I found...my first steel 1943 wheat!

From now on I'm going to re-sort the 1st-pass zincs/extras against a zinc standard.

It'll slow me down a bit, but finding that steel penny was exciting.

Now if I can just find that Indian Head...

WC - Go buy a 1901 IH at your local antique/coin shop. Try the IH experiment. It's a fun little exercise and could save you that second pass all together.

As soon as I get to a coin shop I'll be buying some Indian Heads to use.

As for the steel pennies (1943 wheats and 2000 or above Candians) just use a magnet on the underside of the steel outlet for the aluminum chute.

The steel pennies will jump out of the chute and stick to the magnet without blocking the rest of the coins.

For me this works much better than having the magnet on the side of the chassis next to the chute.
