On another "survival" website the guy said to keep a bag of quarters in your "bug out" bag. Is anyone here keeping quarters or better to just convert their value into Pre-65 dimes, or other bullion?

Fewer of my 90% silver dollars are into quarters than dimes and half dollars. Most of the quarters that I have are ones that I pulled out of circulation in the late 60s when I was a kid. In general though they are in more demand than dimes, but not as much as half dollars. One big advantage is that it's more easy to read the dates on them than dimes. It might mean something if you are dealing with people over 40 if SHTF.

Cheeple, do you mean 90% silver quarters, or clad quarters? (sorry, it may be the way I am reading your post, but I wasn't sure what you meant)
If you mean silver quarters, I think it might be a good idea to have an assortment of silver dimes, quarters, and halves. Whoever you are trading with in a SHTF situation might not be able to make change, so different denominations are probably a good idea.
If you mean the guy keeps clad quarters in his bug out bag; I can see keeping some FRNs in there to use with people before the dollar completely goes away, or for people who refuse to give up the fiat system, but why quarters? Seems like a roll of paper money would be lighter to carry.

There is no way I would put a bag of quarters (either clad OR 90% silver) in my BOB [bug out bag]. BOBs are supposed to be lightweight so you can get a move on. A bag of quarter has to weigh at least 12lbs. By the time you add the rest of your gear into the BOB, you'll have to carry an expedition pack.

The quarters I'm talking about I guess are called "clad" quarters, nothing special just regular old quarters. So I take it based on your answers quarters pretty much suck unless they are 90% Silver..... oh well I managed to make a pretty big bag in only a couple months of saving them instead of spending, I'm gonna continue to save em up and probably convert them into nicks or pennies......

I think there is wisdom in keeping at least a roll of quarters handy.

Sounds like he was referring to the most recent quarters with no silver in them. I think it would be good to carry a couple thousand dollars if you can afford it in a BOB bag. This is especially applicable if you are fleeing a local disaster that doesn't cause everything everywhere to come crumbling down. You could have mostly 50's and 20's and something like 20 fives, 50 ones and a roll or two of quarters. It would pretty much weigh just the weight of the quarters. and would take up very little space.
Also something I have thought of recently is to start training with a pack. As soon as I recover from knee surgery I had planned on going on long marches with a heavy pack on the 5 mile trail in the park nearby just for general fitness, but it could also be valuable training for real life. Why not train so that you can carry that extra whatever you want to carry. I trained person could easily carry 10-20lbs more than a sedentary person and travel just as far just as fast. |

You would be surprised how much weight you can carry with a little practice.
