Is it my imagination, or did the Mint experience problems coating the zinc cores when they started making the newer pennies? Many appear to look as though they were spray-painted with Cu (noticeable bubbles on surfaces).

No, it's real, and you sometimes you can see it on more recent ones.

It's a plating problem. It took them a while to get the process 'dialed in'.

Trust the government? Ask an Indian.
