I just found this tidbit in the Wikipedia entry for gold:

It is specifically against IMF regulations to base any currency against gold for all IMF member states.

So is this the rule only for countries that are IMF members? Any countries still using Au or Ag in coins?

Mexico recently had partial silver in their 10, 20 and 50 peso coins, though the source I got this from was a few years old and out of date.

The last time Mexico made silver coins was to instill confidence when introducing their newest currency. The ploy seems to have worked, as since then, the government has been able to print fiat steadily without causing a currency collapse. Anyhow, I believe, that all or most of the silver coins that are/were part of the newest Mexican currency are currently worth more than face and are no longer circulated and they stopped making them....
