From the collecting standpoint, my start came back around 1980 when my family moved from Illinois to Chicago. As a kid, I hated the idea of leaving my friends behind and was a brat about it. To get me to get to make new friends before school started (we moved in the middle of summer), my dad signed me up for the local pop warner football team with the promise that if I completed the full season I would get a Morgan Dollar. I know I still have it, but just dont remember which one it is in my collection. I didnt really jump into collecting like I am now until last year when I bought my dad's coin collection. I had collected stamps and football and baseball cards along the way, but only picked up coins here and there, and saved wheat cents and silver coins found in circulation. Buying his collection renewed my interest and I think it's here to stay.
As far as copper hoarding, I was directed to this site by a member of coin community two months ago and that started me on my hoarding of copper pennies. I had never thought of doing this until reading through some of the reasons here and now I have jumped into on a small scale compared to some.
Sorry if this was a bit long winded, but I would be interested in reading other people's stories if they want to share them.

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.
