Last week I realized there was a coin reject slot on the front of the coin counter at my dump credit union. I had been using the credit union coin sorter for several months and never realized it. I'll make the excuse that I'm a tall guy and the slot is below knee level. I had 1 penny that was rejected due to being bent last week. I checked the reject coin slot in today's dump and saw that an elongated penny was in there. It was from the Indianapolis Zoo and it was a Jellyfish.
Make sure you check the coin reject slots on those coin counters. I know there also is an internal coin reject slot as well that is only accessible by opening it. I believe Horgad had some halves go in there once. I've seen several foreign coins in the internal reject area when they open the machine.
There is also a magnet at the opening of where the coins go at my CU. I have seen some Canadian dimes and nails stuck to this magnet. I've netted 3 of these Canadian dimes so far.
Found a Silver 1959 Canadian quarter in the bank coin sorter today, along with a 1960 Canadian nickel, and a foreign steel penny which has Elizabeth II D G REG F D 1998. 2 of the coins were on the magnet that is on the inside of the machine.
Total metal value of the quarter & nickel - $2.80.
first time I used the De La Rue I found 30 SBA dollars for free! the machine specifically says not to put the SBAs in but someone gave me a free $30! I love that! I even asked the bank manager if the money belong to them or me for finding it and he told me to keep it!
Checking the coin counter rejects and magnet area are turning up more gems. In the coin reject area I found a Canadian 1929 King George nickel 1929, which looked brand new. I check the value and it's worth about $10.
I've found quite a bit in the reject slots. One time over a dollar in pennies including 7 wheats, a few euros, a couple of UK pounds, 1 silver dime and lots of misc foreign. I always scan the reject slots as I'm passing the coinstars on the way out of the grocery stores and banks. And here's another one.. check the change slots in the grocery stores if you pass by the auto checkouts, and that also means the bill dispenser. Some people forget to take their auto dispensed change. I think I'd have conscience trouble keeping a large amount, but if it was a buck or two....
Most of the public is clueless about valuable coins and some don't even want to bother with change. But if it weren't for these people are job wouldn't be quite as fun!
