I found a 1975-D Penny with a small Liberty Bell stamped to the left of Lincoln's head and a mini-map of the United States with U.S.A. inside stamped to the right (very crisp stamps/not elongated). Does anyone know about this?

Anyyone know of machines that do that? The only ones I can find are the elongated ones. Post any links you find.
I've got a penny with Support Ecology and the Ecology Flag from 1972. |

It can be done with an engraver. I have one but I am not that tallented. All I can do is carve a big H in a zinc penny. I think they have it set up so that a computer controls the engraving device. |

You can buy hardened steel letter punches.
Imagine! Thousands of Zincolns all carefully stamped with hammer and punch....HCBTT |

I think I have a set of those punches hidden somewhere out there in the shop. It would be easier than the engraving tool. But I had my experience with stiking things with a hammer at the 100th annual ANA convention in Chicago in 1991. They had a setup where you could strike your own coins.. like they did it in the old days. Pretty scary! |

I would guess that all of the older engraved pennies were made with something like a Janvier Transfer Engraving Machine. One end traces a relatively large model while the other end mimics the tracing of the model but reduces the size of the image and engraves it. Of course now a days they would just use a robot and program the image in. |

Last year we had a hand punch (just like HCBTT stated) made with our company logo on it.
we hand struck 1000. pennies to hand out as "collector pennies" I am certain that the pennies with kennedys head, liberty bell, flag, etc. are all made the same way.... I am also sure it is done on a mechanical press and not by hand as it takes a while and results in more errors.

Maybe, I just figured that a punch would cause some distortion of the metal especially on the opposite site, but I supposed if you punched it with just the right force enough you could make those fine images without causing any visible damage elsewhere. |

Or if you were hand positioning and punching on leather with a solid surface underneath And not too much presure for the stamp.... It shouldn't cause distortion. But I have no experience... so take it as just two cents. |

i found a copper cent with the state outline of Texas on it. i heard somewhere that some coin company stamped a bunch of cents with state outlines and patriotic designs and tried to sell them to the public a few years ago. they didn't sell many and the company just dumped the extra coins that did not sell back into circulation. |

Only 49 more states to go! It is probably dated 1975 or 1976. I have about 8 or 9 states so far but have not found a Texas yet. It came out about 30 years ago. Some of the sets they did sell have found their way back into circulation as well. |

I have 3 single state-stamped cents: VT, AR, and MI from '75, '82, and '76 respectively. |
