Well I managed to sort another $200 yesterday, with this and the rest I've done I now have another tidy cat pail more than half-full of copper. I'll be over 200 lbs by the end of the week!
I've got $700 of zinc bagged and ready for deposit. This week I'm going to do some drive-buys during lunch hours and try to get $400 of customer wrapped rolls, just to have something different.
Assuming I can get $1,000 of zinc deposited this week I'll be buying another 40 boxes next week from my primary bank.
Fun fun fun! |

quote: As it stands I have one tide cat bucket full of copper and am starting on my second. Give me a moment and I'll weight it...ugh, 110 lbs of copper in one pail. Darn me for being out of shape but I can hardly pick it up and move it! Alas for my weight-lifting days and being able to dead-lift 400 lbs or squat 325 or bench press 240, that's many years in the past. Now I have to be careful of my back when I bend over to pick up pennies!
Lol this quote made me chuckle. I used to lift weights and even competed in one informal powerlifting meet at the local college. Back in the day the deadlift was 565, squat 420, bench 330 so I had a decent level of strength. That was many years ago and now if I gather more than 2 boxes of pennies at a pickup and walk them out the door, my arms and back dont like me the rest of the day. Maybe I should get one of those little red wagons too! |
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

Just made a drive buy of 3 banks and 1 credit union for CWRs during lunch.
Credit Union $60 3 Banks $20 each.
I'll sort these tonight for a light workout on the Ryedale.
Hey, I just had a thought to combine exercise with penny sorting!
Make a bicycle type machine with the pedaling action linked to the hopper feed!

Just think of all the milliwatts of electricity you could save if you rigged that bike up to turn the coin feed hopper on The Ryedale! You would be just like a giant hampster. You could throw in a Richard Simmons tape and pedal your way to riches.
I am curious how the percentages compare between your different sources. An easy way to get the percentages is to just do 1 box ($25) at a time and jot down the # from the accepted counter. Of course you could also get a pretty good count by weight. I remember the first time I filled up one of those tidy cat buckets and tried to just grab it and move it.. LOL. I think the standard tidy cat bucket holds about 18,000 coins. They also make a larger size bucket that holds about 22,000 coins for guys that want a serious workout. Those kitty litter buckets are great.. that is one of the best tips I picked up from this forum.
I highly recommend getting a good cart if you are going to haul lots of pennies in and out of the bank. One of the best investments I made after the Ryedale. My cart has a 660 pound capacity but I try not to put over 400 pounds on it. It is kind of rough pushing it up the incline at my main dump bank some days. |

FWIW I know that I can fit $200 into a "standard" (27 lb litter weight) tidy cat pail. It's not quite full to the brim, there's an inch or so of space left.
I haven't tried the jumbo size (37 lb litter weight) pails yet, I can't hardly lift the regular one filled with copper! Yesterday I put an empty pail in my closet, then used a smaller bucket to move the pennies from the full pail to it. Better 7 or 8 trips back and forth than straining my back lugging 110 lbs down the hall.
I'm sure I'll get a dolly eventually but it's not much of a problem yet to pick up even 50 boxes at a time from my primary source bank.
And my primary dump bank has a red wagon for customers to bring in coins, and you get to wheel it through the lobby out to the car and back.
It's like banking for grown-up kids :) |

You must pack better than I do William.. and I thought I was pretty good. Pour those pennies out and recount them.. I don't think you have 4 bags in there.. LOL. If it only weighs 110 pounds you are way light.. that is only about 16,500 coins. I will have to do an exact count with one of my high speed counters on one of each type of bucket in my hoard. My estimate of 18,000 ($180) was for the standard kitty bucket filled to the brim. I like my buckets full.. LOL.
Good idea decanting the coins to move them down the hall. I use some wire baskets I got at the dollar store that hold about 3,000 for that.. makes it really easy. |

I'll recheck what I've done but I think twice now I've busted open 8 boxes of unsorted pennies into a single tidy cat pail.
But hey, I'm not keeping notes or anything so I could be way off and only busting 6 or 7 boxes at a time. For now my goal is high throughput. So long as I sort the pennies, keep the copper, and return the zinc that's all I'm worried about.
There will be plenty of time later to sort the copper for wheats and nice shiny pennies. I know I found a 1909 wheat yesterday that I kept out. I'll have to check it when I get home to see if it has the VDB or S marks on them.

Hope it has both! I'll never forget the night I found mine in a little baggie of wheat cents that I probably paid 3 cents each for.
I bet it was 7 boxes.. when you really get going it all becomes a blur! When you get another ton or 2 experience under your belt you will be able to dump them directly into the hopper extension on the Ryedale while it is running without getting any little bits of paper or plastic in the machine. I can open them even faster than it can process them. I actually get far enough ahead that I can get all the zinc rejects checked and dumped into the counting machine for bagging about the time it finishes the box.
I agree with you that throughput is the most important thing. I just dump my copper crude in big tubs or kitty litter buckets. There will be plenty of time later to go through and pull out all the wheats. Just grab as much copper as fast as you can and get that zinc back to the bank to convert back into more unsorted boxes. The counters on my Ryedale Coin Artist make it really easy to keep a running count of copper though. |

Ok, just finished the $100 in customer wrapped rolls. I can't tell you any percentages but I did find two dimes and what I think is a British penny (picture of the queen, not canadian, has 1 penny written on it, slightly larger than the american cent and it jammed at the top of the discriminator). Not bad for an hour or so after supper.
Oh, and the 1909 wheat is a VDB only, but I'll keep looking at it in hopes the S miraculously makes an appearance :)

I finally called a branch of Bancorp South in the town I work it, lo and behold they accept bagged coins for deposit!
No more 25 mile drives to dump my zinc.
Tomorrow I'll have $800 of zinc to drop off for them.
Which means today I can order another, oh, I'll make it 24 boxes. Give the source bank a bit of a break. |

Ok, I checked tonight, and it's only $175 that fits into the tidy cat pail.
I guess I'm just trying to push the limits like HCBT does :) |

Just deposited $800 in zinc, 32 $25 bags, each weighed at slightly over 13.6 lbs.
No problems with the tellers, when they asked where I had gotten all the pennies I just told them I was into coin collecting and they were fine with it.
I did ask what the best day for me to bring them is and they said they ship out excess coins on Wednesday, so I will be making weekly stops there every Wednesday from now on.
I guess I should feel lucky in that I can get by with a single source bank and a single dump bank for now, it sure makes things easy. |

Sounds like things are working well William. Congrats on getting a branch of your dump bank close to work.. it really helps if you don't have to make special trips to dump your zinc.
I knew you couldn't pack those kitty litter pales better than I do.. LOL.
You might want to drop your zincs off on Tuesdays.. they usually have to have some time to do the paperwork and most shipments go out in the morning. |
