The hoard is loaded with natural wheats - I do not pull the wheats - figure that can happen later. My first pass through the Ryedales is a "High Sensitivity w/ Zinc Standard"....this pulls nearly all the zinc - that I take back to the bank straight away. Second Pass is a "High Sensitivity Copper Standard"....this pulls all the Copper Memorials and Common Wheats....these go right into the hoard. Last pass is the numis pass - search all the remaining garbage, foreign coins, steel, OLD WHEATS THAT HAVE TOO MUCH TIN to make them a "Copper"....this is where the intresting wheats are mostly found.

I figure my hoard is worth more with the wheats left in....

Sorting Report for today:
25,000 - 10 Boxes
5272 Copper
4 darn dimes
21.09% - Not nearly as good a percentage as Penny Prospector.. Guess I will just have to "sort more." But as Mormon Metal says "More than I had before."

Found an absolutely beautiful blazing red BU 1953-d.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

3/24 $50 Sort
3840 Zincs
1100 Coppers
15 Wheats (1924 oldest)
The rest Canadian.

Today two interesting things happened. First I got a solid roll of canadian pennies, pure 100%. Most were coppers and it was all good, but you must be quite a risk taker to try to reutrn pure foreign coins to a bank. Second I finally got my first Brinks rolls and I am not pleased. Terrible to open in my opinion and the worse percents yet.

1) Leather work glove on left hand.
2) Utility knife with new blade.
3) Hold roll in left hand.
4) Slit roll entire length.
5) Flip in hand - slit down over bucket - use both hands, break in half - coins fall out...works great.
6) I prefer Brinks to Paper.

Brinks are the easiest to open.
1) Tear the end slightly with one hand as you pick it up with the other.
2) Hold over bucket or Ryedale.
3) Bend with thumb.
4) Squeeze lightly to remove remaining coins.
5) Toss empty wrapper in white bucket so you can see a dark spot if you miss any.
6) I Prefer Brinks to Paper also.

Opening Rate on Brinks - About 600 (12 rolls) per minute.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

No sorting of copper today but bought 50 silver dollars today at a flat rate for each one, well below book and just a touch over melt. Found an overlooked 1899 Morgan Dollar in the bunch that lists in Coin Values for $200. I resume the copper hoarding on Wednesday...

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

Got a call this morning from one of my banks that is usualy good for about 1 $50 bag every 2 weeks and they told me "we have 3 bags here, and there should be some good ones it it, the guy said he has saved all of his pennies in a jug for over 15 years and is cashing them in."

Of course I realize that 15 years only gets me back to 1993 but all day I was daydreaming about how much copper would be mixed in with it (I was already aware I wasn't probably going to find my 1909 S VDB in a stash from 1993).

here is my totals... I am hoping that these 3 bags represent the top of the jug and perhaps ther is 40%+ sorts to come (but, Im not getting my hopes up, OK, Maybe I am)

15,000 sorted

5,636 total copper (37.6%)
34 wheat nothing special....
however, I am starting to believe that I have found & own every 1944 penny ever minted!

PP

Happy Prospecting!

10 rolls Canadian nickels.

60 Ni (15%). All of them came from five rolls. The rest were skunks. But they had a lot of CuNi, so while I'm pretty sure they were sorted, I am not positive. One commercial operator I talked to is still collecting the CuNi as well as the Ni, but needs a better price on the CuNi before he will ship them off. Opinions on this board about American nickels suggest smaller scale sorters might only keep the pure Ni. I have been keeping both.

Current melt is 12.85 times face value. I know you can sometimes get down around 10-11% on Ebay but when you throw in shipping costs and the unknown seller you are dealing with makes it not worthwhile to me.
