Saul - Try the IH experiment (Ryedale Experiments Post)
Those 1935's will fall with the rest of the copper every time, as will the IH's and other old wheaties.
P.S. I ran $50 through today on the IH standard and only got 4 zincs in with the copper. |

I ran $250 over the weekend with a 1980 as standard and 10 zincs ended up with the coppers.
Using HCBTT's technique, I snagged 7 (count 'em) old wheats from the zinc pile.
The Ryedale is close to perfect, but the pennies aren't perfect. |

I used HCBTT's technique and some how still missed some old wheats. Guess I was going a little too fast. Then I dialed the IH standard and re-ran a bunch of zinc. I pulled a 1919 and a 1937 plus a dozen or so missed coppers out of what I was sure was pure zinc.
Been averaging about 20% copper here in CO. |

The key to manually sifting though the zinc is to not do too many at a time. About 400-500 at a time works best.. as long as you have a decent size pan to look at them in as you sift them so they are shallow as you sift through them. I use the same method for refining when I pull out all the culls (uglies) and wheats.
With a copper standard on the first sort you will sometimes occasionally get a zinc. This is usually caused by what I call hop-over or bleed-over. This is where the coin either hops over the comparitor and lands directly in the copper box or bleeds over from the zinc box when the zinc box gets too full. For this reason I do a second copper verification sort on the copper just to assure purity. |

Yeah, that hop-over is a real nuisance. If I use deeper buckets the coins fall farther and bounce higher. I've tried several things, but right now a simple cardboard chute seems to reduce the problem to a minimum. |

Well, guess I can't hold all the records..
Zinc happens!
Maybe if I could get some loose bags I might hold this record too.
Still pales in comparison to only getting about 9 coppers out of an entire 24 box shipment. |

Welcome WheatieFan. What area of the country is giving you 14.7%?
Purchased $50 in cents but did not sort. Helped a co-worker in moving back to CA and got $100. I'll put that toward the copper fund. |

Over the past two weeks: 8797-Cents 1547-Copper-17.58% 0020-Wheat 0009-Canadian CU
Also found: An early 20th century cent from the Republic of Panama 4 dimes in ONE roll that was 3 cents short More hair in a few rolls........this is becoming a trend (17.82% not including wheat or CAN.)
Got $24 CWR and $25 box of cents from area banks-all the while on my bike. (Bike=cheaper than gas) Didn't realize how heavy it would get by the time I stopped at the fifth bank.....it was a workout. Will work through that over the next week or so. |

Found my first Indian! No one else is on so I will get exited all by myself!! Sorted 2 $50 bags so far tonight (1902 IH reference) and at the end of the second one there it was. A 1907, a little discolored but not too worn! also found a 1910 and almost every pre 40 in between. 164 wheats in 10K. Not bad! 1 more $50 to go from the same batch before bed. Maybe another Indian?
P.S. All pre 40's including the IH fell with the copper (right side) in the 1902 IH reference sort. |

Another bag. North Georgia. These are from a small bank that rerolls what customers turn in. Possible dump for other sorters. Might try a different bank.

WheatieFan.. welcome to the forum. I think you have actually found a good source bank. Most of us count our wheats as part of our copper %. What would you say your percentage is if they gave you an entire bag of wheat cents? What is killing your percentages is those 1982 cents. You need to get a little scale and sort those out.. it will improve your your percentages significantly. Most guys that have sorted large numbers of 82's report that they are 80-85% copper. If we add back in the wheats and the copper 82's your percentages come in around 20%, which is not bad for your area. It looks to me like there are no other hoarders dumping at your source bank. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
