I bought $10 of pennies at the bank. When I asked for them the teller couldn't believe it; She said that she never heard of a request like that. So I brought them home, and me and my sister sorted them out. Took about 30 minutes to sort/roll the 1981-down from the 1982-up, and we got about %30 copper. So I am going to try to make a sorter myself next, and if anyone has any help to offer, let me know. Going to see if we have a coinstar that doesn't charge nearby.
Edit: For my second time, the teller(same one) asked me what they were for, and has been quite helpful in this endeavor. They only had $25, told me to call a week in advance if I wanted more(which I just did).

30% is great, see if you can sweet talk that teller into a continous supply. (I only get a solid 18% no matter what I do.)
It will be very hard to make a pratical sorter. The cheapest way I can think of is a very good electronic scale. Probably less than $20. Them coppers just weigh more. I am sure other members can stear you in the right direction. I have a ryedale sorter, so I am spoiled.
Good luck on the free coinstar, just try and find a bank with a free counter.

Hello lukeownzu, I think I recognize your handle from another forum ;)
Welcome to the wonderful world of penny sorting. I'm only a couple of weeks into it but have already sorted $150 by eye.
I'm just about to purchase the Ryedale as soon as I can talk to my wife about it and make sure she isn't going to get totally mad at me.
A little mad is ok :) |

Some banks in some areas have counting machines in the lobby that are free for customers. Alas, none near me yet. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Brandon, don't worry what other people think when you are doing good. It is a lot better to be know as a "business man" than someone who wastes their money on k-rap. Tell them you are investing your money and starting to save for college. They will probably bend over to help.
My daughter (17) isn't the slightest bit interested in coins, unless they are spendable. |

Credit unions seem to be a good bet to find these and I think some TCF banks are doing it too. Call around and see if they have free coin counters or free self service counters so you can get crazy with this hobby/obsession. |
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

When I was 14 I didn't think it looked weird at all for a 14 year old to be bringing in pennies.. now a 49 year old bringing in pennies.. that looks weird. |

You really get the looks when you wheel in a cart or dolly full of pennies....I don't mind the attention or the looks. Heck, the bankers know me BECAUSE of the pennies. Don't worry about it, you are doing nothing wrong.
Deal
p.s. Directed to the under 18 crowd: What do your parents think of the penny sorting/hoarding? |

When I get the looks I just tell them.. "I have so much money I have to wheel it in." |

One day a gentleman held the door for me and said I was either taking in tools or was so rich I had to wheel my money in, I told him I wasn't there to work. I just smiled and said thanks and went in....Should have seen his face.

I think it's great that you young folks are getting in on this. What others have said is 100% true, no one is going to think you are strange for bringing pennies in to a bank. I'm 43 and I'm starting to go to a bank every day now during my lunch to turn in $15-$25 of zinc.
Heck when I was a young teen I would often pay for fast-food and soda's and such with pennies. The merchants weren't always happy about it but they never turned me down either. Of course that was in the mid/late 70's too when you could get a soda for 50 cents or so and a fast-food meal for a buck 50.
We've got 3 inches of snow on the ground here in North Mississippi, enough to shut us down for the evening and tomorrow until it melts off. That means I'll finish up my $75 this weekend easy, and I will probably sneak out tomorrow for a few more rolls ;) I've already gotten through $25 tonight and will finish up just a few more before bed time.
Hopefully I won't wake up in the middle of the night like I did twice this week and spend an hour or two sorting before going back to bed!

I wonder why he would hate the fact that his son has a one-up on most of his peers....
