With all of the negative bank teller posts I just wanted to share a "success story" I have a local bank that took a couple months of me stopping and them telling me that they wrap all of the pennies they get (right!), but I kept stopping and every time I said No Problem!.. Some day you will have more than you want to roll and I will buy them if you will let me. and I would stop every week & every week I would pass the Brinks guy as I went out the door (I stop by the bank next door anyways so not to much trouble)
One day they had a bag and every week since (about 6-7 weeks now)
This week I was hit with the same snow storm as Wolvesdad on tuesday and it took 1 1/2 hours to get plowed out of my drive... So I stopped in and asked "did the Brinks guy beat me?" she replied "YES, but we all decided that you would probably still be here even with the snow so we kept them for you"
OK
tonight I opened the bag and sorted it... only 7 wheat BUT 46.9% copper!
Just wanted to remind everyone that for every bad bank teller there is a great one and the ones that tell you no today maybe the ones that save a 46 percenter for you later!
*Disclamer* Altough I am writing this sappy post today, it in no way shall stand in the way of my writing or comenting on how bad or stupid any or all tellers or bank employees may be in the future. Furthermore I am confident that none of my friends on this forum shall ever use this post against me.

Great story PennyProspector. Thanks for sharing. The rest of us are getting hit with duds and shiny boxes and you are getting 46%! At least we can enjoy your luck vicariously. Congrats! |

Here is my good bank teller story.
One of my supply banks is small and only had about 6 branches. Only the main branch has a coin counter. My branch's manager has told me she can get me one or two bags a month transferred to her from that branch. One month they were going to transfer a big bag of halves. But they forgot to order the armored car, so the vault teller from the main branch got in her car and drove it to my branch. She arrived right at closing time so I got to thank her.
When they handed me the bag she said "there is silver in there" Turned out $260 in halves = 142 silver halves including 2 WL & 7 BENS

I can share my teller stories... Ordered 4 boxes from a credit union I've had an account with for a couple years... They arrived and I dumped $150 of zincs there on that trip. They laughed at so many pennies....this new teller was nice, but he really didn't want to be feeding the coin machine.... as I was getting my boxes, the vault 'lady' said she wouldn't be able to order me this many for a while.... not mean or anything, just seems to be more than what they 'expect'. I don't mind. Hand sorting doesn't go through 4 boxes too quickly anyway.
At another branch, different bank, the vault 'man' called my today and said... I've got a bag of pennies for you, if you want them please pick them up today, we can't hold them. Not mean, just 'matter of fact.' I got the bag. Tested a couple handfulls... a few wheats, but won't produce 46%cu. I was asking about Ike dollars or anything else unusual, the teller seemed very nice and said he would hold anything for me. Cool.
Third bank, ordered boxes. Picked them up today, and was also told... nicely, that they get charged for ordering these boxes so she could do it this time, but not again with so many. Maybe a box everyonce in a while will be okay,.. but this brank does CWR so I will have a fun supply of dimes and nickels from there anyway.
None of these Vault 'boses' were mean. But they were restrictive. It's okay...i hand sort. But it does hinder me from taking the next step and getting a coin machine/sorter... I don't think I'd get enough cents for it to make sense. |

I've never been threatened with the "F" word....Sounds like you need more banks. Time for you to do some bank shopping. If the vault man called to tell you about a bag, then that is good no matter the rush to pick up. For me, preorders work almost perfect. Every now and then they might forget to order, but that only temporarily holds things up. Don't get discouraged just keep trying. Good luck!

46 % is rare... But I still believe that you will get a better percentage out of the bags, as I mentioned b4 I am about 1 hour from you and maintain about 30% copper.
the down side is that when they have them they want them gone... dont get charged for them (unlike boxed pennies) so there is no cost restriction to sell them.
you may be able to get a point that you can stop the day prior to the banks pick up and or call and just make it a normal rought..
most banks have the same pick up schedule if they are close to each other so the nice thing is when I go out to pick up (tues & thurs) it isnt to pick up one bag its to pick up 5-12 bags.
keep asking for them an you will soon need that machine

I'm happy with my credit unions, but not real happy with my bank. Since I openned my account there 2 years ago, it has changed names 3 times. They are never happy when I stop in there with maybe $25 of rolled coin. I take any that is rolled 100% zinc I get in there. I have a very large balance at that bank, and will probably pull most of it out later this year. There's plenty of other competition out there.
I was asked if I wanted 5 rolls of customer wrapped halves about a year ago at my credit union, and bought them. Every one of them was either 40% or 90% silver. I never turn any customer wrapped rolls down, because you can always cash them in if they are duds and sometimes you hit the jackpot.
My main credit union has always gotten me my Brinks boxes. I order 2 from one branch and 10 from another each week. They know what I do and are happy to help. |

I was out prospecting yesterday and had very good luck. But it is interesting the different responses you get from bank to bank. It varied all the way from one bank wanting to charge me a fee of $7.50 per $25.00 box, which is only a 30% fee, which I thought was a little ridiculous, to one bank teller offering to help me carry the six boxes I had just bought from him to my car.
I had three tellers offer to order me pennies because they knew I was looking larger quantities. So now I have three banks ordering me 10 boxes at each bank for next week. I had one teller say to me "It is too bad you did not stop last week we had a guy bring in $400.00 worth of pennies." but they had already shipped them onto the FEDS. But she said give me your name and phone number and if that happens again I will give you a call. Of course with my luck it will be another hoarders ZINC dump.
I guess my main point is if you run into a bank that wants to charge you a fee or does not want to sell you pennies, just go down the street to the next one. They are like car dealers there is one on every corner. |

My newest bank has free coin counting; the manager even lets me look at the coin bags when he opens up the machine (including the reject bag now - I wasn't impressed). He saves me silver dimes, etc. and sells them to me at cost. I also keep getting free vacuum sealed Tupperware to store my coins in. I'm always treated like a king. I feel really bad for overgenerallizing on one of my past posts now. At my original bank, where I used to be treated like a leper, I finally met the assistant manager. One day I came to pick up some pennies, and the teller was acting strange/upset/confused. The assistant manager came over and (snap-snap) said, "Just take the rolling table to the vault and get the man his pennies." It was great!!! The people on this board have taught me that it's all about building rapport with the right people.

RE: Reject Bag: People were putting many half-dollars into the machine (which it doesn't take). Unfortunately there were no silvers or clads. There were also many Canadian Loons, quarters and dimes. Many tokens and foreign coins (Belgium, etc.) were also present (unfortunately, nothing looked very special). It was still a thrill though! |

I only have one bank (two branches I use) I dump and pick up pennies from extensively. I have not found such excellent service they provide. Last week the head teller had my order of pennies and then says to me when I came back (to deposit a check), "did you got through those pennies yet". "Yes, my machine doesn't play". "You should have brought them [the rejects] back because I order some extras for you". This week was the same. Those are the banks you take care of. Have a "bank appreciation day". |

I'm a gardener, as well as a penny hoarder, so I plan on bringing cut flowers to the tellers at least once per week this summer. I'd be lost without a few key bankers that I've recently befriended. I think that the "Bank Appreciation Day" idea is great. We should plan it out. |
