Was wondering if anyone on here had bought any Mems. yet?I see them on ebay every now and then and have seen people buying them on Craigslist before. If you are confident that they will be 4 or 5 cents each soon,is it wise to "get as much as you can" even if it means paying .015-.02?
Your thoughts?

still plenty of em out there for exactly .01 each. i'd say it just depends on your time and percentages. you say you're still around 25% so i'd just continue what you're doing. if time is short* then yes look around for deals.

* meaning short on time in your day to buy, sort, dump and repeat

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.

That might depend on how many you want. Let's say you want $250 face of copper coins. If you are going to sort only $1,000 @ a 25% average, then it wouldn't really pay to buy a sorting machine, yet it would be at best a labor of love to sort out by hand. So I could see paying .015 now in that type of situation. S&H of course would be another consideration. But if the copper penny supply starts to dry up .015 may be a real deal.

I sort (or may weekly sorting goal) $222.22 each week and get a strong 17%. I like to buy every know and then just for speculation. I have some 82's that should be coming later next week and I may purchase another lot from someone else. I say it depends on how content you are ('content' and 'hoarding' don't ring well together). I want a large hoard, but I want the majority of that hoard to be MY work.

He, Art Tatum, confuses me on almost EVERY one of his posts....hehe

Deal

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

I won't BUY any copper cents... I have bought silver before, but, as said, why buy when you can get them at $0.01 each at your local bank. And I'm not that big of a hoarder.....

IF there was one of the BIG hoarders NEAR Ft. Wayne, IN that would sell to me for cheap($57-$60) of $50 copper face, just so they could do more quantity......Then I WOULD be a buyer!

1.5x is just a bit too low, even to free up some hunting cash. I might consider 2-2.25x (my wife told me I could make more just working part time at McD's)
lots of work involved:

  • find coins

  • carry into house

  • open rolls

  • Ryedale sort

  • count zincs & bag

  • count coppers & box

  • carry zincs back to car

  • return zincs back to bank

I am like others that hope/expect a 5X+ face value once the ban is lifted.

I was always of the thought that I'd never pay over face for Cu pennies until last week. The person from who I bought 100 BU rolls of Canadian 1963-67 pure Ni 5 centers last year (@ $3.25 per roll) called me. He's a 70+ year old guy who was a hoarder long before most of us were even born. He said that he wanted to start selling his BU rolls of Cu memorials and thought that I might be interested. Anyway, I bought 258 BU rolls of 61Ps, 73Ds and 74Ps at less than a buck per roll. They arrived over the weekend in 2 tightly packed, heavy USPS flat rate boxes. Great looking coins. He has several hundred rolls of 60P lincs, but concerned about them containing 60P small date cents in some rolls. (Guess I would be, too.) Trying to work out a deal with him that'd involve me looking through them for him. Anyway, interesting stuff. You never know...........

Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply.

Yes on Ebay you can get them for about $.02 each INCLUDING shipping on average.I had a guy email me with 500 rolls for $490 but personally I'm not willing to pay that yet.In the summer I believe the prices to buy will soften up a little bit.

Cyber,
I agree 1,000% with you.I sort the pennies by hand for the Excitement(every time I get a wheatie, I call out to my Wife WHEATIE!!!) and to pull the CU's and not really for the profitability. In my life I'm pretty stictly a businessman,I don't wear a suit or tie but most of what I do is for a long term goal/future.I've collected coins on and off since I was about 10 and have always pulled the oddball coin out and put it in the jar.
For me I would never buy a sorter because then,to me, it would start to turn into a job and I couldn't just be a big kid sorting pennies.

i agree,it's alot more fun just sorting by hand.
if you bought a sorter, you would have to...

* buy the sorter
* buy more pennies to pay for the sorter
* carry more loads of zinc to the bank
* find more free time,
and,
* try to convince the spouce to keep it goin like this (a big one)

That is why i say stay small, and gradually grow, but keep it un-noticeable.

On the contrary, I purchased my Ryedale to free up more time and the machine has done just that. Now, instead of spending an hour to sort a box AND date-sort, I can sort and date-sort in less than an hour.

No offense taken. I only sort what my budget allows me to sort. Well, with an addiction, you do cut corners sometimes...

Not that I have that problem...

Some of us just like to have more fun. I only sort what my budget allows me to sort also. The Ryedale just allows you to be a lot more efficient. It is a tool.. and well worth the money for the amount of time it frees up. You can still sort the same amount of pennies.. you can just do it a lot faster. You also have the option to sort a few more in the same amount of time.. giving you a better chance of finding Indians and older wheats, and allowing you to grow your copper hoard at a faster rate before Brinks sucks all of the copper out of the coinage supply.

Sort more to find more.

I was reading about misteroman announcing each wheatie. Bet that drives his wife nuts. I like the idea though. I have a bell that I was presented for doing a speaking engagement at a Numismatic Association of Southern California convention several years ago. Always wondered what to do with that bell.. now I know. I am going to ring the bell.. DING and announce each wheatie I find. This is going to be such fun.. at least until she bounces the bell off my head.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

Hoard,
Now you're getting the big pictureNah, she doesn't mind too much as she's in the other room watching the shows she taped earlier.I really like the bell idea.If you find a really good one or an Indian maybe you can hit it multiple times.I wonder if I still have mine around from the pizza shop?LOL,I just got the idea of getting a little airhorn and doing it.Now, that would be funny and annoying at the same time.

I've found myself doing the same thing, only happing 5 or so times since i've only gone through 1 box and 10 rolls. It's just the excitement of thinking that your work has paid off, (including high copper percentages).
