Can one of you that weigh out your boxes please tell me the exact weight of a $50 bag of copper pennies?

I only sort out of $50 bags and then count them back into $50 bags & am trying to get a total poundage/tonage total.

how many pennies to a pound?
or
How many pounds to a $50 bag Etc.

My scale is very small and is for gold and gem stones and I have to do alot of scaling up to get a total in pounds and not grams.... So I figure with this vast storehouse of knowledge why do the work myself when I know one of you must know the answer off the top of your head.

thanks

Happy Prospecting!

3.1 grams per Cu Penny....5000 count per $50 bag....5000 x 3.1 = 15,500g = 15.5 kg.....454g/lb.....15,500 / 454 = 34.14 lbs per $50 copper bag.

34.14 lbs per $50 if all copper.

As a side note...copper penny is bullion....1 penny = 1/10 troy oz....10 pennies = 1 troy oz!!!!!

And just to clear things up a scrap yard who would buy the pennies would use regular pounds, not troy pounds and as bullion you would use troy ounces and troy pounds as stated above. I can see 'troy pounds' being a standard for the future of penny bullion.

'Buy pre-82 pennies at 4 times face and selling pennies at 5.2 face' A phrase coming soon to a coin show near you.

Just weighed my first box of paper hand rolled copper cents. $25 in copper cents with box = 17 lbs, 3 oz give or take an ounce.

Wow, MY FIRsT BRICK!!! (others are loose, or bagged in $15 bags)

You're right, if Copper goes up to $10 per pound, or if pennies are melted to the point of rarity, THis Forum's hoarders are going to be..... mY BEST FRIENDS!!! [I hope! ;-) ]

Assuming they are all US copper cents (Canadian coppers come in a variety of weights) it is between 147 and 152 per pound depending on wear.. so I just use 150 per pound. 3 rolls equals 1 pound. 300,000 = 1 ton.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

According to the Chicago Fed Letter (Febuary 2007) 154 copper pennies = one pound.
