Hello, I'm a new member to this site and I've been hand sorting pennies for about 3 weeks now. On my recent trip to my bank to drop off $35 in zinc pennies I was greeted by a bank teller that asked if I was a coin collector. I've read other posts that have different views on whether to be honest or avoid questions like that all together, but this question really caught me off guard and of course before I found this site. So anyways, I was honest with him and said yes, I didn't elaborate on how or why. He looked me with the most disgusted look and said that this bank doesn't do that kind of stuff. He took my pennies and deposited them into my bank account, but did so in the most disgusted way and left it at that. Its now been a couple of days and all I can think about is: Can a bank say that it won't take your money and deposit into your bank account? Has anyone ever had this happen to them? Should I close that account and try another bank? Thanks for your time

When my wife got after me it sounded like "Blah,Blah,Blah", but now it sounds like "Clink,Clink,Clink". Its amazing what that Ryedale can do for a hounded husband. |

I would talk to the manager. A bank is a business. Would you put up with service like that from any other business? Tell the manager this happened a few days ago and you are still upset. Ask if it is bank policy to treat other customers that way because some teller just does not like something about that person. |

You'll run into this. It's your bank. Talk to the manager and get this a**h*le's nose straightened out.
I have one branch of my bank that I use as a dump bank because the teller there is a penny cop. She actually cards me when I pick up a box. When I drop off, it's the greatest bother for her. This is the only teller of a huge bank that acts this way. That makes it all the more fun.
Most times, when you tell a teller that you are a collector (that's all I say - not a word about hoarding) you get some degree of interest or amusement. Some are collectors themselves.

Does everyone get there pennies from another branch of their bank or can you get pennies from other banks that you don't even have an account with? I understand that you must have an account with your dump bank, but it would be nice to pick up pennies from any bank that you pass on the way home from work. |

Many people like to go treasure hunting and stop at every possible bank and ask if they have any coins that they can buy. This works well for small amounts and has the bonus that you get many hand wrapped rolls. I have done this a few times and I have only had one bank say that they don't give change to non-account holders.
For large amounts where you have to order the pennies in advance, I would recommend an account, but surprisingly it is not required. Or rather many banks will just assume that you have an account and as long as you pay in cash they will never know. I have a bank that I have been picking pennies up every week now for 9 months or so and the funny thing is that all of the people there know me and think that I have an account, but I don't. Shhh...don't tell them.
By the way, just today I walked into a bank, told them that I was thinking about opening an account, but that I had a special requirement of needing a standing order of 10 boxes of pennies a week. They said no problems, welcome to our bank.
Getting pennies is easy. I could be up to my eyeballs in pennies if I wanted...now getting rid of them is a different story. |

horgad.. you ARE up to your eyeballs in pennies!.. just ask your wife.
I agree that getting pennies is much easier than getting rid of them.. LOL. Many of my banks are happy to give me pennies as long as I promise not to bring them back. You can get pennies at banks without having an account. I call these my drive-bys. Usually it is smaller amounts though. To get large quanties at one stop it is best to have an account and preorder several boxes.
I agree with El Dee that you may have found your dump bank. It is fun to take zinc cents back to tellers like that. He wants to look down his nose at you because you enjoy looking through coins and are turning in a few rolls of pennies, but in reality, he is the one who is poor.. most bank tellers don't make squat. Talk to your bank manager and find out exactly what their policy is. Some have requirements that the coins be rolled. Some have a limit on how many you can turn in at any one time. They might not like it much if you roll up with 24 boxes of zinc at a time. If taking in $25 worth, box them up all nice and neat. It is best to turn them in in even box quantities. |

Thanks for everyones comments. I've composed a letter that I'll be delivering by hand to the manager of my bank today on my way home. I'll let everyone know the results. I would also like to get a ryedale to make this hobby go much easier than handsorting, but I'll have to wait to acquire more funds for that (maybe he'll take zincs, lol). Thanks again and I thought buck fever was bad!!! |

The last teller who asked if I collected coins pulled out 19 silver dimes she had been saving (for years) for the first collector she saw. My cost $1.90 |

If they try to pull a fast one, like citing some dubious policy, ask to see it in writing. Be patient, be kind, but be firm---and don't let them give you any nonsense.
Good luck. |

Well, its Friday and I got a response from my bank. The manager actually called me at work and apologized for the way that I was treated and said that he had a talk with the teller. He also stated that I can drop off as many pennies as I would like and that all I would have to do is fill out a deposit slip and they would run all of them through their counter and make the deposit that day. I didn't even know that they had a counter! No more rolling! Well, I guess this hoarder got a break, thanks everyone. |

Sounds great M83striker! Congratulations! Having a bank with a counter for zinc disposal is ideal. Now that you have your zinc disposal plan in place it is time to think about upping your weekly take of pennies. Right now while they are in a concilitory mood is a good time to set up your weekly order of pennies from them.. say 24 boxes or so.. |

I'm not sure I would raise such a stink about the attitude. What is most disturbing is that they "card" you and you accept that as standard practice.
But then again I would have said its for the "kids coin collection" and they would have smiled. |

My bank that I have done business with all my life has decided to start carding me when I buy pennies. Also, I was there the other day and the teller had 3 silver halves at her window. I told her I wanted to buy them and she said that they were hers. I should have argued, because they were nice franklins. I have decided that they can be my dump bank. If the tellers can sort the banks money, than I can sort my own and they can eat the zinc.
I also learned that most of their branches have counters and I can bring coins in in any container and they will count them and deposit the money into my account within 72 hours. This should speed up my sorting as I have been hand wrapping all my returns so far. |

M83Striker, Welcome. Sounds like you handled the event very well. Next time you dump zinc you may want to use the same teller. Remember BIG SMILE... Something to keep in mind. This collection hobby that we have is becoming very popular and is at times inconvenient for banks and tellers. The situation you experienced probably wont be your last. Strange looks are common also. |
