Looks like eBay has opened up a can of worms that would have been best left unopened.
Will this knock eBay off its throne? If one of these alternative auction sites did a better job of marketing and advertising, maybe actually let the masses know they even exist, then the realm of online auctions would change, hopefully for the better.

| I've seen a significant reduction in pre 82 copper sales in the last week. Not sure if this is related to the EBay changes or the price everyone is getting for their efforts in these forums. |

| I am one of many eBay sellers that would be happy to make a switch to any viable alternative. I can understand them wanting a bigger piece of the pie.. but there is only so much pie. I have a few listings left ending tomorrow and the next day.. then I am taking a long term break from eBay. It will be the first time in about 9 years that I have not had active auctions going there. It is a free market.. they are free to set whatever price they think they can get, and I am free to decide not to play there anymore. I am voting with my feet. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |

It's taken many years for eBay to get to where it is in terms of size, making a market, public acceptance, etc.
It would take some years for a competitor to topple eBay, but there is a point where people start to look for alternatives.
Think of Netscape vs Explorer vs Firefox, or Lotus vs Excel.

| I don't think there will be a single website to usurp ebay's market. Instead, many smaller, niche sites will arise in its place. Just a guess. |

There are lots of alternatives to E-Bay, but nothing comes close to the volume of sales that they do. More sales equals more liquidity equals closer to fair value auctions. I think the best idea is to use E-Bay as an advertising tool to lure people away to other sites were you sell to them at lower costs...
A good place to start exploring alternatives:

E-Bay consistently raises it's fees despite constant growth, but there are other sites I buy and sell on like ioffer and craigslist, If anything I think Craigslist could beat e-bay if they tried. |
