Hello,

One thing I've noticed about sorting Canadian coins is that there are very few old coins in circulation.

When sorting Canadian Pennies, the oldest penny I ever found was something like 1941. I've found US pennies as old as 1928 in Canada mixed in with Canadian pennies. So...even though US pennies only make up a small amount of what is circulated in Canada, the oldest I've found was a US.

When sorting Canadian Nickels, the oldest nickel I ever found was a 1937. I think the oldest US nickel I found in Canadian circulation was a 1942, but as only a small percentage of US nickels are in circulation in Canada, it is interesting that the two oldest coins are from about the same time.

This comes from a sample of about 15,000 pennies, and 10,000 Nickels.

So are older coins not as plentiful in Canada?

Just a few weeks ago I found one of those King George (?) cents it was around 1928 to 1932. I kept it because of the age. Seemed to be in pretty good shape.

Funny thing is I am only about 80 miles from mexico and getting the older canadian coins.

I have found a few of the Canadian King Goege V pennies from the 30's also. It takes a while for them to work their way down to us guys in California.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

This is interesting. Perhaps, Canadians are collecting up all their older coins, but ignoring the US ones.

Folks tend to collect coins from their home country first. Also, the mintages on the US coins are much higher.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I believe that Canada had their version of the large cent until 1920. You'll never find an older Canadian cent in a roll of contemporary pennies since none were made. The large cents are fairly reasonably priced as a decent example can be bought from a coin dealer for a buck or two. Sort of interesting to imagine them circulating in the pockets of the fur traders, Klondike gold rush speculators, etc. Also prior to 1920, Canada didn't have what we consider to be a "nickel." They had a small diameter 5 cent coin made of silver. These are also interesting and can be purchased cheap.

Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply.

I actually collect those small silver half dimes also. They are very reasonably priced. I also have several of the large cents in my collection.

Until about last month I had only found two King G V in about 1000 rolls of nickels. Then I ran into someone's collection of them and got over 100 of them in a short time. A lot depends on the demographics of the area you are in. In areas where a lot of older folks have been living in the same place for 40+ years, you will get an older population of coins, which dribble into the bank system. If you are out in new suburbs full of young people and businesses, the coins seem to be newer.

Not all who wander are lost.

Very true - I have over 1 ton of Canadian coppers...and it is rare that you see anything from the early 40's....I've only seen a few 30's and a even less 20's....

I noticed this a long time ago, but never had a good answer....perhaps the mintage is just very low....what was the population of Canada back in the 30's.....a few million...perhaps 10 million....that is like a NYC!!!

Correction to my post from earlier.

Last night I looked for that coin and found my King George. It is a 1908 one cent piece, the size of a quarter. When I first saw it I thought I found a chain cent. I had never seen one in person I just remembered it had a chain on the back.
