So the N.F String and sons, Inc boxes with paper rolls are a different company and have no connection to Brinks?

So when I get boxes there will be Brinks kind with plastic rolls (the ones discussed here), the N.F String and sons, Inc paper rolls, and I assume that theres Loomis boxes (which are not believed to be sorting at this point).

I am located in East Michigan.

I just glanced over my box and that was what it is.NF string and sons.It is stamped CWI#82 jan 22 2008 and has an inspection #.2 out of the 4 boxes were 07's.
So far out of 8 rolls I got 92 CU total from 400 so a little over 20% so it's ok so far I guess.

I like the idea of putting tracers in our zinc. Not sure about red as a color since I seem to see a few of those already. Maybe purple, green or orange. Maybe we could engrave our initials on the tracers and folks could report on the board when they found an HCBTT purple cent. There could even be a prize for the first one found.

So far I have only received Brinks type dud boxes from one branch of Wells Fargo. Other Brinks boxes from Wells and Bank of America have been normal. Will be picking up more boxes from Dud Central Bank on Friday. Maybe I will get lucky and they won't all be duds this time. If they are then I will just suspend weekly orders from that branch and make it one of my dump banks.

As I understand, CWI is an independent company that is somehow inte-related with NF String. CWI stands for Coin Wrap Incorporated. They have coin processing centers that handle massive amounts of coins. Again rumor, so don't take this to the bank, but I believe they contract directly with the mint, and handle the injection of the new dollar coins too. Remember the hub-bub about the missing side inscription on the dollar coins. All those coins came from CWI centers, and the boxes brought different prices based on the CWI number stamped on the box. This company is super secretive and we should start a separate thread with CWI information IE bottom CWI # and area to reverse engineer the potential locations, and to determine if they are alloy hunting.
Something to keep in mind through all this, is that all these companies Brinks,CWI etc., are just like any other, with employees, wages, overhead, etc. To start the penny activity, is more likely going to be done by 3rd party profiteers like us, but on perhaps a larger scale. Remember it could be being done en-masse before they ever get to the armored cars, and then to the Brinks or CWI wrapping/processing centers.
Brinks and CWI serve the banking/commerce industry for profit. To "meddle in metal",(i like that) is out of their normal routine. Remembering too, that they would need a green light to melt (for profit) or at a minimum have contracts with big operators, (including with the government) to do the activity for profit. Not saying that they couldn't start for profit, but it's out of the normal business.

Going forward, we will have to work harder to intercept Customer Wrapped Coins (or bulk customer returned) before they get back on the armored cars, and get back in the hands of CWI and Brinks.

Just picked up 4 boxes I'd ordered a week ago .... all brinks dated Nov.19, but I know my bank didn't get them that long ago....they'd been sitting up at Brinks since then I guess....so for me, date is very important. But I haven't weighed them yet. Let's hope for rolls and rolls of INdians and wheats! :-P

When I get boxes of pennies I ask the teller to make sure they are all not new. I have not got a box of pennies for 2 years no because I get the $50 bags from there coin counter.

Coin counter bags are best, but out where I am none of the banks have a coin counter so I can generally only get boxes. The dud boxes we are getting are not new, they are mixed date multicolored rolls which are 100% zinc.

Well today was really rough. My entire shipment of 24 boxes were all duds. Ouch! I traded 2 boxes at one of my other banks and both of those were duds as well. Interesting note though.. I picked up 8 boxes earlier this week at the first bank that was giving me duds and only 7 of them were duds. They sold me 4 more yesterday and only 1 of them was a dud.. the other 3 were normal. Is Brinks slipping?

Do you still open them up or do you just weigh them and be done with it?When you get 24 boxes you take the hand cart right in the bank with you?

I just weigh them on the big scale and leave them sealed. If they are a little heavy I open them and do roll weights on the small scale to find the ones with copper. Found a nice 25-S that way the other day. Nah, they don't want me to bring them back. I spread them around to all my other banks and buy gas with them.

I reported this a month or so ago and last week I got four $25 boxes the bank ordered for me all via Brinks in the plastic rolls and not a one Copper penny in the entire bunch! I am in North Carolina. This is the second time this has happened so I know something is up!!

Yeah, I don't know... with this sporadicity(word?) it just seems like we really may just be getting other sorter's dumps. I don't know, it hasn't added up very clearly yet...
And HCBTT your area makes it hard because they put no dates or numbers on the boxes. Perhaps the GOOD boxes are old ones that were from the bottom of the pile, just now getting shipped out from their shipping area.
Anymore thoughts?
I haven't gotten anymore dud boxes, but also, not received any #137 boxes. That was the # on the three duds.

It's sad because I have only been at this a few months and invested in a Ryedale coin sorter etc. Also I had arranged with the bank to take loose bags back! Ugh... It looks like the party might be coming to a close. Regardless, I'm not giving up, I have too much invested and I'll try other banks in the coming weeks to see if things turn up different. I also agree if you can get "old stock" it does seem to make a difference. Good Luck!

I know that I beat this drum alot! but if indeed they are sorting out brinks boxes you need to re-evaluate your plan.

The way I see it you can raise the bridge or figure a way to lower the river or just do nothing and be stuck with what you are given.

IF YOU HAVE A BANK THAT WILL TAKE LOOSE BAGS.... then you must have a bank that accepts and counts loose change from its customers... If you could get thier LOOSE coin b4 it gets sent to brinks you can get it b4 it gets sorted by someone else!!! If you can find 1 to 5 banks that would be willing to sell you their $50 loose bags you would have plenty of coin to sort with.

remember, there is tons of copper pennies out there... It is just setting in change containers in peoples houses and cars waiting to be taken in to the bank... get it b4 it is taken to brinks... an industrial sorter does not have this opportunity because they could only get the volume they need from a supplier like brinks!

I know that in some areas the banks dont have sorting machines so they don't have bags but I believe in most areas they do have them and you just need to talk them out of them!

thats my 2 cents worth!

Henry Ford said "If you think you can do a thing or think you can't do a thing, you're right." keep a possitive attitude, you have the best sorting machine I know of for the money, you have a bank to get rid of the zink.... all you need is the raw material & the great news is ther is other ways to get it you just have to find it.

(or you can give up and sell me your ryedale cheap)

Oh please let this not be true for at least another year! I can't get my Ryedale until next week when a deposit I made Friday clears, and I can't afford to buy too much copper until then either.

I've got a bank in Memphis that I can dumb the zinc loose in bags but they have to be counted, I suppose that's much better than wrapping. The nearest coinstar in a bank is 3 hours away, so it would be a full day to take pennies there, probably not worth it.

Now I'm starting to worry! And what's worse is my wife already thinks I'm insane and is really miffed at my wanting to do this. So to start right in with 1 or 2 thousand dollars of pennies a week is going to be problematic at the least.

Gotta sort sort sort and start getting the customer wrapped rolls too!

Of course I am not Psychic but I think the fact that you do not want to sort alot at one time is to your favor!

Relax, as I said in a previous post, there is alot of copper out there!!! Curently some people are bumping their heads on using brinks.....

you will be able to get your hands on $100 to $300 of unsearched coin relativily easily for a while! Even if brinks or someone else is sorting.

you need to see this as a sign though, now is when you need the Rydale the most.... if there are industrial sorters already in play that is an indicator that the whole melt ban is going to go away sooner than expected... you should want to get as much hoarded b4 then.

Happy Prospecting!

Before doing a 40 or 80 box order I think I would get a smaller sample order first and check it out. I have other sources besides banks that use Brinks.. but I had those banks trained to order decent quantities on a regular basis. I need to go out and develop more non-Brinks sources for my pennies and also start dumping exclusively at the Brinks type banks to dilute the competition's supply.

I agree with PennyProspector that now is the most important time to have a Ryedale. I had envisioned this scenario occuring once the melt ban was lifted but did not expect it to occur for at least another year or so. Time to step it up and grab all the copper you can before the competition gets a chance at it.

Don't worry too much William.. worst case is you get a bunch of zinc.. at least you can get your money back on that. If you can develop any sources that wrap the pennies in paper your odds are much better. This problem has only been reported by members with the Brinks plastic wrap type rolls. You might want to get a good scale so you can check boxes without even breaking the seal. A zinc Brinks box will weigh between 6385 and 6400 grams.

I think something is going on too. I know every major sorter within 100 miles of me.. and while we are all doing some pretty good volume, collectively we do not do enough volume to cause this level of bad zinc karma. One of the other major sorters near me has also told me he recently got a pretty large batch of duds.

Hey, maybe Jackson metals is shipping to my area because I have created a penny shortage.. LOL.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I have been getting 28 - 30 % Brinks in the last 2 weeks here in Indianapolis. I believe Horgad is getting the similar numbers.

Right now, in Indianapolis, I am picking up boxes weekly as follows:

10 Brinks boxes from the North side of town (a new bank for me). So far no duds in 3 weeks (knock on wood).

6 Brinks boxes from the South side of town (duds every week for the last 6 weeks ranging from 4 of 6 being duds to only 1 of 6 being duds)

10 Fed boxes from the South side of town. Never a dud though there is always a "risk" of getting boxes of uncirculateds (none lately).

So all my duds are coming from the same bank from a small order of 6 per week, but I've never gotten 100% duds so I keep picking up from that bank.

As soon as spring is firmly in place, I'll get my helper out again and increase my pick-ups from 26 a week to 36 or 46...

Well down here in Mississippi I haven't seen a Brinks box yet, the 8 boxes I've purchased so far are paper wrapped and not in plastic tubes.

I'm going to start calling some banks today about taking bags of loose pennies and about purchasing other peoples bags of pennies.

I'm conviced that this is a Mint undertaking. News that they've upped their zinc order tonnage dovetails with the dud boxes people are getting. They need to make more zincers to replace recovered copper cents.

If it's all true, my hunch is they have a copper quota to meet for the year, once that's met the machines go off until next fiscal year. I don't think they will engage in open ended sorting, they need to replace the coppers with zincs to prevent a shortage of cents, and they can only make so many in a year.

That may explain why you get a few good boxes here and there.

I haven't gotten any duds other than 2007s so far in the upper midwest.

Trust the government? Ask an Indian.

havn't seen much of a difference in the two, brinks seems to have more wheats, while the paper rolled boxes have more copper.

horgad.. What us your theory on why you never get a solid shipment of duds at that one bank? The bank that first started giving me duds gave me 4 for 4, then 8 for 8, then only 7 out of 8, and then on Friday I only got 1 dud out of 4 from them. Really seemed odd. I expected it to be solid duds after the first couple of weeks. This bank is 50 miles from my home where I do most of my banking. I was afraid this zinc problem would be expanding as I read of other members experiencing the same thing. On Saturday my worst nightmare came true.. 24 out of 24 boxes from one of my regular shipments were duds! I had never gotten a single dud from that bank before. Then when I swapped 2 boxes at one of it's competitors across town both of those were duds also. Good thing I have a small stockpile of unsorted boxes and had good luck getting several CWR batches during the week.. wouldn't want the Ryedale to start rusting! I could handle a mix.. but a solid dud shipment really hurts.. especially a shipment of 24 boxes. I already had a zinc disposal problem.. I didn't need this additional challenge. Maybe I should just take my scale with me to the banks to save time and frustration.
