I can whip through a $25 box of pennies pretty quickly and still have time to carefully look over those of particular interest for errors, die varitiies, etc.

I'm having problems with eye strain, though. I use my computer for mostly work and that may be the root cause, but I've tried sorting in a number of ways and locations with no hint of great success or improvement.

I've tried sorting with and without my glasses (no line bifocals) and under different light conditions. Incandescent lighting as well as fluroescent seems to have the same outcome. I only have rare opportunities to try sorting in sunlight, so that's not even a regular option.

Is this a common occurrence? Obviously my eyes aren't as young as some, but I have great vision (corrected). For those who've experienced a similar problem, what's worked for you?

The eye strain makes me feel like a geezer when I'm not even close.

Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply.

Get one of those work lamps on an jointed arm with a 4-5" magnifying glass next to the light. Works well.

I have experienced eye strain both from work and from pennies. The best thing that you can do is take some breaks and perform some massages and stretching techniques on your eyes. If you give your eye muscles "good" exercise in theory the muscles should get stronger and build up endurance, but you have to give the muscles breaks so they have time to repair and build up better/more muscles.

So you need to stop sorting or working at the first signs that eyes are over fatigued. Give them some rest and pamper them a bit and they should be stronger the next time you need them...IMHO

Breaks, eyedrops, and horgad's exercises should do the trick. As a person who strictly hand sorts, I know exactly what you're talking about.

Very sound advice. I am good for about 10-20 rolls at one time, depending on how may day went and how much time I spent in front of the computer, as well as how tired I am. Even a 10-20 minute break after a certain number of rolls is helpful, and I like to get up and go play with my dogs (after washing my hands of course). After that short break, my eyes are ready for another round of 10-20 rolls. It breaks up the routine some as well by breaking it down into shorter lots. I learned that from my days of lifting/powerlifting. One veteran lifter told me that when doing sets of 10, break it down into subsets of 4, 3, 2, 1 so that it feels like you're getting somewhere. I applied that same subset thing to coin searching and it works great.

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

I think all of us have experienced eye strain while sorting at some time. Others have offered excellent advice about taking frequent breaks and allowing your eyes to rest. I have one of those lighted magnifyers like the one pictured above but I hardly ever use it.

One thing I found when I used to be a serious hand sorter that worked well for me is to find a way to sort that is easier on your eyes. I accomplished this by changing to a digital scale to do my sorting. Not only was it much easier on the eyes because the numbers were much bigger and easier to read, but I found my sorting speed actually doubled using this method. My regular smaller scale is easy enough to read without straining my eyes, but I have an even larger one that has numbers about an inch high that eliminates virtually all possibility of eye strain.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
