Well, it happened.
I've been sorting for about three months and I just got my first box of duds. Fresh from the mint the whole box was 2007 zincs.
I guess it could be worse, it could have been someone else's zinc poop!
This does bring up a question since it has never happened to me before what can I expect in my next batch? Does this mean that I have harvested the circulated pennies from that bank and they will probably have nothing but Zinc for awhile?
Should I switch to another bank for a while?
Another way to put it is ... Do the boxes that come from the Fed to the banks have a random chance of being fresh zincs or mixed? or do the batches clump together (All mixed or all zinc)?

There are usually only a couple of coin distributers in a city and all the banks get fed from them. So which bank you pick the pennies up from does not seem to matter in my experience. The only exception being that the bank might still has a few of the "duds" left in their vault from their last coin delivery. In any case, just order more than you want to make up for the duds and by all means if you can figure out which banks use which distributers, go ahead and get a variety.
Or the short answer it is mostly luck and randomness so no worries. |

Thanks horgad,
I was worried there, I had images of a mountain of new Zinc waiting in their vault to ruin my day.
I also noticed not all of the boxes have the holes on the bottom so you can't always know ahead of time, that is annoying. At least if I can see that they are all zincs I could ask for an exchange with a different box right there at the time of pickup. |

It happens to all of us Metal Maniac. Imagine if you picked up an order of 48 boxes and they were all like that.. it happened to me.. LOL. Actually I don't even consider a solid box of BU cents duds. The way distribution seems to work is like this.. if I want boxes of BU cents I can't get them anywhere.. if I don't want any, that is when they start showing up all over. Always best to have several source banks so you increase your odds of getting a good mix of boxes. I have found that the banks that get their coins from coin services that wrap them in the plastic Brinks wrap rolls rarely have new pennies in their rolls. You might also try getting some coins from credit unions.. they tend to have more customer wrapped rolls.
You might consider taking a good postal scale with you to the bank and you can check box weights like horgad does and know right away if the boxes are solid zinc. |

Thanks HoardCopper,
The postal scale idea sounds good.
48 boxes of zinc! WOW! That does sound like a bad day, and here I'm complaining about ONE box of zinc!
You guys are amazing and way out of my league.
Right now I'm just doing two boxes a week (due to finances). That isn't even 'copper dust' to you guys! |

| Yeah, it was really a big day even for me. They screwed up and accidently doubled my order. I told them no problem, I would go ahead and take all of them.. little did I realize that they were all zinc until I started opening boxes.. LOL. Funny thing, those zinc cents seemed to start getting heavier as I unloaded them from the trunk once I realized they were all shiny ones. No peekaboo boxes in the entire lot. I had already picked up an order of 24 boxes at one of my other banks earlier that morning.. fortunately those were normal or I wouldn't have had any pennies to sort that week. I was really sweating the next order of 24 boxes I had already placed at the zinc palace bank for the following week.. I already had zinc up to my eyeballs. Fortunately those came in as normal also. |
