Hello... I have been reading posts on this board for quite some time. I am a fellow penny hoarder as well. I have been doing it for 2+ years now. I have 51 plastic totes each carrying 50,000 +/- count 1959-1981. Seperated all 82s and ran through ryedale to rid of zincs. I am starting to wear out though... there is a lot out there. Luckily, my kids are trained and they love running the sorter :) Now... what happens when they get out on there own. The thought scares me :) Doing it to preserve coinage more than melt value. With the ryedale, I plan on doing 50 boxes a week. There needs to be AA equivalent to penny hoarding. How about PHA? Simple enough

| My collection grew fast about a year ago when I posted a sign on my store stating that I was paying 30% return on copper cents. I got between 20000 - 24000 on average from 6 sorters bringing them in ... all youngsters wanting to make an extra buck. |

That is a monkey load of copper pennies. It sounds like you just got your ryedale or did I read that wrong? Did you really manage to hoard 2.5 million coppers doing hand sorting? If so, all I can say is wow...
I would put a sign in my yard saying "buying 1959-1981 pennies for 65 cents a roll", but I am pretty sure that my better half would remove the sign and bury me with it in the back yard. |

What is the footprint of that many totes? I guess I'm asking how do you stack them or whatever? That's a lot of zinc dumping....Is your store a coin shop of some sort?
Deal
p.s. I bet I'm not the only one who would LOVE to see a picture of all those.... |

WOW WOW WOW!
You are the Copper Stud! 50 x 50k = 2.5 Million = 8.5 Tons....
You must have got most of these via the 1.3X Face Value Purchase Program you were offering.....
I've got 1 Million...and I've been busting my hump with Ryedales for about 10 months....I'm between 25 and 50 boxes per week at roughly 30% local Cu population.
I want to learn: 1) Where are you getting 50 boxes per week? That's $1250/wk.. 2) What is your local copper %? 3) Where/how are you going to dump 40 boxes of zinc (assum 20% Cu)? 4) You will be sinking about $250/wk into the hoard...but that is roughly the same pace you have been on for the past 2 years.
I also hoard about $250/week.
I'm interesting in seeing your tote system....where can I buy these? 50k/tote x 3.1g each = 155,000g = 155kg = 340lbs per tote....my 4 gal pails are about 150lbs...so you must have totes of about 10 gal...do they stack well?
Love to learn more about what you are doing.
I'll just call you Cu-Zilla! |

| Looks like a lot of you are catching up fast. Don't have the time I did in those days. I will post a picture soon of my system of storing these. I am glad I am not the only one doing this. A good tip that also worked for me is paying people / friends/ etc... 2.50 - 3.00 premium for unopened box of pennies. Simply tell them how to get them, so you won't have to deal with bank nuts. I got on average 15-20 a week. Anyway, I don't hold on to zincs although they may be worth collector value some day due to the fact they don't withstand circulation very long. Happy hunting to all... |

| yes... I have a large jar full of zinc 1982s I just sorted. Thats it though. I use to do the ring test and that was 95% acurate. Anyway, If you want the zincs, I can ship them at cost to you AND save any others I find for future ship. Just email me at slade99@comcast.net. Thanks! |

Oops.. turns out my son got rid of the jar, but I have a couple thousand 82's to go through. I will save them for you. After my sorted 82s are gone, I now longer save all 82s as my sorter weeds them out. The machine is running now and I have got approx 50 from the first 5000 count of 82s. I got rid of zinc 82s if they didn't pass my ring test back in the day. My miss rate varies between 1-5% depending on my experience and mood at the time :) By the way.. the weight of each of my totes are between 320-360 pounds - thats why I estimate 50,000. I DO NOT Stack them as they sway enough when moved. You can actually feel the plastic bend and these are made well. I move them only with dolly. This makes the totes a very hard target for theft as they have to be hauled upstairs and what are you going to do? Bag them! good luck... The totes do hold up fine, but afraid the tops would crack if stacked.

Amazing! Does someone (or you), eyeball the 82's before you sort them? And, if you do hand sort, I guess the 82's is all you would have to machine sort, correct? |

For 82s, they sound different when dropped, so you can sort them like billsattic said,
you can weigh them with a gram scale;
you can take a swipe with a file on the rim and if it shows silver, it's zinc;
or get a Ryedale, which is the fastest way. |

| This discussion just gave me an idea. Use the thick plastic totes and build a strong wood plank on top. The, by stacking on this plank you redistribute the weight. I think it would be best to mtotake plank sections in this case - maybe a 2 by 2 tote coverage. These totes are approx 10 gallon size - maybe a tad bigger. I wouldn't use a bigger one - this is recommened max - 8 gallon would be ideal and 20% lighter in copper weight. Well... trying to sort 12 boxes this afternoon. See yah |

I know but first you have to find the 82's. That is my question - I assume you have to hand sort them out of the box. |

Xtim, read post above (a few up). I have about 20000 82s left to sort. Assuming i am 95% accurate - the ryedale should spit out at most 1000. I DO have a jar right now of 82s that are the zinc varities. I used to send them back to bank, so the jar full and the ones yet pulled are all that I have. Please read post above with email address. thanks |

Can't you just pack the totes with pennies so when you stack the next tote is resting on the first...I do this with 5 gal pails and can stach 3 high. |

c140 -
I'm temporarily (?) using 5 gal pails, but can't lift them, only scoot them around. How much do you put in each? I can't lift one to stack. |

These are donut shop frosting and filling pails...more like 4 gal....if I shake them, they will hold about 160 lbs of US Cu...or 150 lbs of Canadian Cu....
I pick-up old wooden pallets...can fit a 3 x 4 pail foot-print..stack 2 high...makes a nearly 2 ton pallet....the limit of my pallet jack. i can move them around the garage for cleaning.... |

El Dee.. there are some serious lifters on this forum. A 5 gallon pail only weighs 190 pounds.. use 2 hands.
Seriously though, I don't want to hear about any penny related hernias. The trick is to put an emty bucket on top of your full lowest level bucket and then fill it with copper pennies. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |
